Would it be worth it?
How hard would it be?
Idea on cost of parts?
Has anyone done this?
Likely results?
Thanks in advance,

I also have wondered about this exchange, but in my case, for an '87 MY. Since Dave brought it up, I too will chime in and also ask. As we all know, gear sets are unavailable elsewise.
The possibly lower top end is no worry to me. Slightly quicker responces are of interest, though. <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

Changing just the ring and pinion gears is a major task. The pinion gear is part of the transmission output shaft. This means that to change the gears, both the transmission and the differential unit must be completely disassembled, and reassembled with very precise shimming and adjustment. Not usually a DIY job.
It is much simplier to swap the entire transaxle unit.

Thanks Wally,
That's not what I really wanted to hear <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" /> But it does answer my question. <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />
In your oppinion do you think the response gains would be worth it if a good used transaxle was found?

Wally, DR, Steve C. or anyone else with info. Does anyone know how much the ring and pinion cost? and is it available?
If available, I can handle the dissasembly and reassembly of my own trans. I think!

This has always been an interesting project to me as well. There is one more option out there for changing the gearing of our autos, but it's a bit pricy. Housman Automotive (519.652.3030) can make a new custom ring & pinion for the 928. In the past, they made a batch of 3.09 gears for a group of buyers, but say they can make just about any ratio you want. The catch is I was quoted $2500 for the parts. Maybe if we came up with a group purchase, they would give us a break...but I doubt the price break would be enough to justify the purchase.
