Mechanics in Detoit and Atlanta
Hey everybody,
Going to Detroit to buy a 1988 928 S4. I am in Atlanta and unfamiliar with Detroit. Any suggestions where to take the shark to get checked out by a knowledgeable mechanic?! Thanks for any help you can offer. By the way, I am a newbie with the 928.
Thanks Tim

I had a PPI done for a car that I sold last year in Farmington Hills. Jeff Jones ownes Automotive Techniques (248) 615-8964 and works mainly on Porsche vehicles and is a trusted source of 928 inspections. I think he charges $200-$300. His web site: http://www.automotivetechniques.net/
Let us know when you are heading up here. We may be able to arrange to meet you and give you the Detroit Area Owners thoughts on your purchase.

When are you coming? I'm in the Detroit area and can maybe help you with some of the more esoteric items on the 928 (like the computer, etc.)
As for a reputable mechanic, I would say Munks Motors in Waterford or possible Fred Lavery's Porsche (Dealer) in Birmingham would be good choices. Both are expensive, but should give you a descent Pre-purchase inspection.
One other possibility is Jeff Jones at Automotive Techniques in Farmington, MI http://www.automotivetechniques.net/
Edit: See what happens when you start composing and people walk into your cube...

Tim,
Welcome, and tell us more about the car, where it's located, and your plans. As Mark said, we can probably offer some support to you.
If you're closer to Birmingham, the guys at AutoEurope seem to be conscientious and know their way around a 928, but, I've only used them once. We've got a good shop in Ann Arbor, too.

I plan to be in Detroit on the 24th of July. The car is an '88 928 S4 with 82k miles. 3rd owner and says no leaks but the engine has a "moist" spot. Paying 15K if all seems o.k. I owned for a very brief time a '87 S4, but not much experience with it before forced to sell it. Thanks for all the feedback. I will give you updates.

Jack Swint, Porsche factory-trained master technician, He's the shop foreman at Hennessey Porsche in Atlanta, 770.643.6100 and he's a 928 owner. I've been very impressed with his expertise, very personable and reasonable/fair. He did the PPI for Gaijin, and Risky Biz, and he's currently working on my Silver S4...the first time in 19 years and 5 Porsche that I've taken a car to the dealer for any work. Ed M

I couldn't agree more w/ Ed MD...
I met Jack Swint for RSKY BIZ's post-purchase inspection, (which followed a PPI in AL) before I undertook a 1K mile drive to DFW with her...
He said he wished he could be my 'service guy' for RSKY... I wished the same.
So much so, that when I had master cylinder issues in MS, I seriously contemplated having the car transported BACK to ATL... to him.
Because it was 500+ miles in the backward direction, I opted differently, but he gave me phone support just the same.
IIRC, btw, his shark has 240K+ miles on it!
Good luck with your shark endeavor...
If / when you do make your 'catch'... give him a call and stop by...
*no affiliation... *fee-free!
Oh, and, welcome to the Shark-O-Phile Dysfunctional Renn Family!

I'll have to agree with RSKY and Ed, I have been beyond pleased with the work Mr. Swint has done for me. Its also reassuring that he does drive a 928.
I saw a light blue OB 928, and a wine red 928 s4 w/white leather interior and wood console there today, anyone from here?

Can't thank you enough for the great recommendations! I will need to get some advice regarding the AC. Apparently it is not up to speed. I am going to have Jeff Jones give it a look during the PPI. Also, there is a crack at the base of the windshield, which supposedly was addressed and no longer spreading. I can't deal with cracks! Any suggestions on new glass for the front windshield? Another issue is the sunroof motor. It "needs help" to open the sunroof as well. All and all still sounds like a solid car...If the PPI goes well...it's coming home
