Talking Performance chips

Well, I have procured a parts car for my Shark. The PO, has informed me that the car does have performance chips installed. Where would this be located, and what would I need to do to R&R them to my shark? TIA

I will have it in my possesion this afternoon.

I just applied and paid for my Rennlist Membership.. I do think supporting this site is the way to go.

I installed AutoThority chips in my previous 928 (86.5S). Your 85 has almost the same fuel and ignition control systems.
Your car's engine has two brains - one for ignition, the other for fuel delivery. You'll need to take the brain boxes out (they are in the passeger rightside foot bolster, to the right of the fuse panel and attached side panel). The cables connected to them have a quick release lever. [As with all the connections, use caution while disconnecting and reconnecting them.]

These boxes will have to be opened. Once opened, look for the OEM chips that look like the ones you bought. Notice they have one 45 degree corner. The new chip must be installed in the same direction. Do not use a ferrous metal device to pry off the old chips. Likewise, be very careful not to bend any tabs when installing the new chips.

PS. Think a lot of 928's are off to SITM. Like to be there myself.

Would it be wise to pull and exchange the brains instead of switching the chips?

Didn't know If I had to do some other mods. or adjustments.

I work with computer boards, and repairing of them as well in my field. So, I have the so called eprom pullers too, many different styles.

Cool

Here's one for y'all-

I also have an '85 928. It is slightly different-it is a European version, technically known as an "S2". The car is very similar in looks to a US model [extra fog light at the rear, side turn signals...] but has a 2 valve engine with high compression and nasty cams that yields 310 hp.

A US model has an LH control unit with part number 928.618.123.03. My S2's has control unit 928.618.123.00.

Anyone know if a chip is made for the S2's?

Normy!

If the cars are both the same year and both either U.S. or Euro versions, you could just switch the computers. It wouldn't matter if one car was an automatic and the other a manual either. Any programming differences between the two different transmission types are determined by the coding plug that's seperate from the computers.

I don't know if there are chips available for the S2, but you could always go with a piggy back computer if there aren't any available. In my opinion the piggy back computers are a much better way to go than chips anyway.

How can I tell who manufactured them, so I can find out more about the chips themselves.. Not very knowledgeable about chips.

I'm looking for some help with installing a set of chips on a 87 S4. I have the ez control box off and opened up. The problem is it looks like all of the chips are soldered in place with the exception of one that has some type of funky cover over it. This one and one other chip are the roughly the same size as the one I received. Can anybody help? Please don't tell me I got to solder this baby in place!

Thanks,
Brad

You don't have to do any soldering when changing to aftermarket performance chips. It's just a matter of unplugging the stock chips and plugging in the aftermarket ones. Make sure that the new chips are oriented properly. There's either a corner cut off, or a small dot-like indentation on the chips so that you know which way they go. One of the chips that does get replaced has a cover cliped over it. I can't remember if it's the chip in the LH or EZK computer that has that cover, but it's on the chip in only one of the two computers.

1984,1985 and 1986 USA cars timing are

Intake opens 6 DEG.ATDC
Intake closes 54DEG ABDC
Exhaust opens 43DEG BBDC
Exhaust closes 4DEG BTDC

Euro cars of the same years

Intake opens 11 DEG.ATDC
Intake closes 46DEG ABDC
Exhaust opens 25DEG BBDC
Exhaust closes 2DEG BTDC

Changing the controller will have an effect on these cars, the controller are map different for open loop, closed loop, cat, no cat. The ignition timing is also different. Injector pulse timing is also mapped different. The car may run, but not right

Cars with LH and EZK controllers require one chip for each unit. When changing any EPROM, disconnect the battery before opening up the controllers, make absolutely sure you ground yourself to the car by touching any metal object to discharge any static electricity.

Thanks Mike - that did it - There is a small black cover on the one. Once that was off I was able to replace the chip.
