Exclamation update on gas cap/emissions problem

My problem was that I failed emissions due to not having a gasket on the gas cap. After many people on the board telling me that their car didn't have a gasket I became angry at those emissions people because I thought they were wrong. But I called a couple Porsche dealers and vendors and they all said that there was in fact an o-ring gasket that is supposed to be in the cap. My gas cap definitely didn't have it so I checked the gas tank filler neck right where the cap screws on to and guess what I found? That's right- a black rubber o-ring that I peeled right off and stuck in the gas cap. You couldn't even tell the o-ring was there because it was black and blended in with the rest of the filler neck. So I went back to emissions today and they passed it this time. I bet if those of you who didn't have that o-ring checked the filler neck, you'd find it.
Anyway, tomorrow I go to MVD and can finally get my plates and register the car here in Az. Woo Hoo!!!!
See ya!

Jay,

Congratulations on passing, we look forward to seeing your 928 on the roads here.

From what your description I'd say that there isn't a gas cap o-ring. I'd say there is a ring that resides on the tank portion of the car!

Jay. Went through something kinda similar here in GA. For my year, they run it on the dyno and do the testing.....and all of those test were well within specs. (like way below warning). Now, the last part is the gas cap test, where they screw the cap onto a tester. (can you guess what's next).

No adapter would fit, so they fail me. (but good news to follow). Well, I get my $25 back from them.

I call another local place and they say bring it buy. Now, because this was just 1hr within the last test, all of the data was still in the GA database. The next place (a bit more knowledgable about autos) shows me the Stant charts. No caps (and we all know looking for a 928 cap, unless its from a 928, you aint gonna find one). So, for those its an auto pass on that test, as long as you have the cap.

$25 to this place and nothing but smiles from me.

Bob

I just passed (for the LAST TIME!) my 79 auto here in WA state. The guy took one look at my gas cap and said.."I'm not even gonna try to hook that thing up. We'll call it good."
Car passed the "sniffer" with flying colors (whew!)
The woman hooking up the tach cables said "what kind of car is this?" I just smiled, popped the hatch, and hooked the cables up to the battery. They never even looked under the hood-which I was sweating, because the air pump is disconnected...
But who cares?
FLYING COLORS!!

Today I had a similar experience. The smogman looked at the gas cap and said he didn't have an adapter for external threaded caps. It's a smog-friendly county here in "backwards" Humboldt. So he said he'd skip that part. I still have to go back, because they didn't have time to lift the car and look at the egr valve. But they did say that the smog pump was a visual inspection only. Then for fun they sniffed the tailpipe, and the car is really clean. And it wasn't even a hot engine. Nice!

Well, they did the dyno roller test on my car first too, then they searched under the hood and decided that some of the things they were looking for were inaccessible, so it passed that. The sniffer test was no problem- no issues there.
So then they take the gas cap off and the guy stares at it for a while, wondering why it failed the first time, so I tell him the gasket wasn't in it the first time. So he takes it to another lady and then they go talk to 2 other employees who examine the gas cap like it was some kind of crucial evidence from a murder or something. Then all 4 of them walk back over to me and I was getting concerned, and one of them says ok, it passed. Ugh! All that for a gas cap that was fine to begin with. I can't wait till next year when I have to do it again.
