![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
So I'm getting my 80 Euro S painted in about 3 weeks, and trying to accumulate as much "prep" information as I can as part of the process. Have 2 questions regarding the rear quarter windows:
1. Currently, I have a problem with the driver's side rear quarter window. There seems to be a leak in the seal along the bottom edge, as I can see faint water marks and if the car is outside during a big rainstorm, I can almost count on finding a pool in the spare tire compartment. The windows will be removed for the paint job. Is this something that will get fixed by just reinstalling the window - or do I need to replace the rubber seal when the window is reinstalled?
2. The metal trim on top of the rubber seal obviously used to be black, but whatever colored it has worn off and now it just looks like kind-of-burnished stainless steel. As the rest of the trim on the car is black (around the windows on the doors, around the rear spoiler, etc.) I would like to go back to black for the quarter window trim. What's the best way to do this? Just have it painted? Powder coat? Is there some kind of plastic overlay like what's on the window trim on the doors?
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Snowball,
I was planning on having the bodyshop that's doing the repaint remove the windows... but now you've got me scared. No way would I let them remove the rear interior quarter panels!! Is this really the only way to remove/replace these windows... even by a trained professional in a high-end glass shop?

Considering the age of your car, the rubber seal might have hardened to the point where it is not a good idea to reuse it. Also, there might be some corrosion under the seal - despite the zinc coating of the body - just be prepared...
Porsche changed the trim pieces to plastic at some point. You are referring to a spoiler, so I think you might have the S Spoiler. I don't know, if plastic trim pieces are available for this configuration.
On my S4 I had the trim replaced with the mew plastic pieces, and it looks great! I don't remember what the cost was, since it was paid for by the window tinting company that damaged the old trim...

If its any help as advice, remove the quarter windows prior to painting. The PO of my car had the thing repainted about 6 mos before i bought it. They didnot remove the window trim. the masked up to it. I now have a 1/4" square rust bubble under the paint at a point where moisture has worked its way between the seal and the new paint. Winters coming so its going back to the painter to be fixed.

John, I missed your question so long ago about the Converse Engineering V8 Volvos. Rawbear in New Jersey does them as well and probably a bit better. Shoot me a note if you get a chance and I'll tell you more about it.

I second Nicoles' comments regarding seal condition. Also, John makes a good point regarding the down side of painting and not removing the seals.
The new trim pieces are indeed black plactic (well, except for the corners).
That being said, expect to expend a few more $$$ for the seals and trim (that is if you don't reuse your existing trim).
Powder coating of your existing trim may be an option, but will probably cost you more in the long run.
