1987 S4 electrical problems
Want to thank everybody for the great info I received about my wheel bearing problem of last week. Thats all been taken care of so its now on to the next major one.
I need help from you electrical guys out there. My S4 has no interior lights at all, and the rear hatch releases next to the seats do not work. Also, the rear view mirrors and reverse lights do not work.
I have checked the fuses, and all seem ok, but need to know if possibly there is one, or two, relays that might have gone bad.
As I have said, I am new to this car, just purchasing it last month, and am in the process of getting it back to its original condition. It sat in a warehouse for close to four years, so a lot of minor things are in need of repair.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

John-
The Interior Lights and the Hatch Release are kinda related in the wiring scheme - if the fuse(s) check well - then I would suspect the Relay is kaput (be sure that the Interior Lights are 'switched' properly).

Hi John,
I would find a spare relay in the fuse box area, or buy a couple of spares. Most of them are the same type. Then replace questionable relays. If the replacement does not work, you can duplicate the test by putting the questionable relay in a working slot, and seeing if that area still works. The 928 Specialists site has fuse and relay guides under the 928 Specs and Technical reference section. See: http://www.928gt.com/

Thanks Jay for the info about the interior lights and the hatch release being related, and the relay could be bad. Do you know what relay that is, and where it is located on the fuse board? I don't have a manual yet, so have no Idea which it is. Also, what do you mean by interior lights being switched properly. Could that mean turning the little illimination wheel under the dash on the left side to full brightness?
Yep, it is a shame that the previous owner has left this car sit for four years, especially in southern Calif., in a hot warehouse. Its going to take a little effort, but I will get it back to like new condition in a short while.
Thanks again for all the help.

The light intensity rheostat is only for the Instrument Lights in the Pod.
The other Interior Lights on my 87 each have a black toggle switch (or in the case of the roof lights - 3 position rocker switches).
These switches have -
1) on (only when doors opened or maintained on with relay for ~30 secs after doors closed);
2) on regardless of door operation; and
3) off regardless of door operation.
I've been known to turn all of these 'off' when I'm working on something that requires having the doors open for awile - keeps from draining the battery - or burning out the bulbs (like when I replaced my carpet). I forgot about them being switched off - and scratched my head for awile before I figured it out (doh!).

Thanks Thomhross and Jay:
Went to 928 spec. and printed a copy of fuse and relay locations. That should be a real help.
All light switches are on. I have tested the wires, and there is no juice to the switches, so it a problem before the lites and switches themselves. I also have no insturment lights in the pod. I thought they were part of the interior light circut. Am I wrong?

Hi John,
I am glad to be of service with the diagrams. Note that part numbers are specifed, so you can switch a good relay for a questionable one until you get replacements. I hope you are that lucky.
As Jay said, the instrument lights rheostat is on the left lower trailing edge of the instrument pod. Roll that wheel to get lights on. If that does not work, check wires going to it.

cleaning the contact point on the back of the switches fixed all this on my car...
