Post Windshield HEADS UP!

I know windshields are getting harder to find, so this may be of interest to anyone looking: <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33686&item=2415127268" target="_blank">Windshield on eBay</a>

FYI;
If your looking at it, double check w/ the seller. He/She has the header listed as 87-84 & 89 and the description says 78-84 & 89.

Thanks Rob -
It's gone now... woo hoo!! Been looking for a non-antenna windshield for a while. Mine is so sunpitted and sandblasted it's hard to see through in sunshine... not to mention the two birds-eye chips. It'll be nice to look out through clear glass again!!

Cool

I need a windshield for my 81'. Went to my local Fast Glass outlet and got a quote in writing for $360.00. I have not asked them to order it yet, but from what I have seen here, that seems like a pretty good price.

Jim,

If they can get it, that's pretty incredible. The old style windshields without the antenna in them are NLA, from what I understand. A few months ago Eric Dvorak did an extensive search out here on the east coast and couldn't find any supplier who could actually lay hands on one. You might double check with Fast Glass and see who their supplier is... could be a very useful piece of information!!

To those replacing windshields that have antennas:

Be careful. You can have my windshield, courtesy of the PO. It looks right, has an antenna, but no Porsche antenna connector. Spend a few minutes to pull the sheet metal at the lower edge of the windshield. See the connection. Ask to see the identical item description from the supplier.

If you find a windshield with a male antenna connector that works with the Porsche female receptacle, private email me. I need a new windshield too. If you get the right windshield, please send me your old connector. Just snip it off the old windshield please.

I am looking for a windshield. Mine has a nice star in it thanks to a rock. I checked with a local supplier and they said the non antenna unit is available. Anything else I should know about going ahead with this transplant? Are all aftermarket windshields the same? Seems there is two colors of tinting available tan and green. Any counsel on this?

Hi Gretch,
FYI in case you can't get the proper shield. I know your in MA and get a free windshield, but have you thought about getting the star fixed. My 85 caught a rock last summer and the star was about the size of a Nickel. The glass company repaired it. The quicker they get repaired after the damage, the less visible the repair.

I just replaced mine (antenna type) with a local Utah company for $340+tax installed. Genuine Sigla! I didn't believe them when they called and said it was available but they said they had both antenna and non-antenna available. Non antenna was $20 more expensive.

They (Diamond Glass) can be reached at 801-467-5401. I know that they don't have any stores outside the Utah/Idaho area but you might be able to purchase the glass through them and have it installed locally.

Good Luck, Dave

A guy here in Detroit with an 82 Wiessach just got a new windshield. It came from South Africa and cost about $900 (to the insurance company). It's not the amber tint, but at least it fits.

I just spoke to one glass company and they have an obvious motivation to recommend against repair. Anybody got advice on where to go for this? BTW "Gretch" is insured in NH as that is where it is garaged. I have to check with the insurance company about coverage...Any experience out there by NH shark owners?

Gretch and Dave, others...
From my calls there seems to be an adequate supply of windshield out there, but the mere mention of 'the Bronze' (tan?) tint evokes apologies/hysterical laughter.
This might account for the $900.00 South African import that Andrew mentions.
Man, I'd hate to have a windshield sitting up in the rafters (just in case) along with a bunch of other parts as my wife is pretty handy with a gun.
But, when things get as rare as hen's teeth you simply have to have a little insurance.
Besides Pattycakes would look a bit on the odd side with a green tinted windshield and the rest tinted bronze.
Hmmm. Who's house do I ship this to?

I'm in need of windshield as well - 20th Street Auto does 175.00 used and an additional 50.00 to install. Shipping is outrageous.

Gretch,
You probably know all this but, NH insurance isn't regulated like MA. When I tried for a new WS for my 85 because of the stone chip, they (State Farm) told me my deductible would apply. I keep my deductibles high because I do all my own work and insure a multitude of vehicles. Because the star was in an area of the WS directly in my main field of view they fixed it for no charge.
Hope this helps. See you on the roads of NH maybe.
