Default Transport Ideas

Good day, Tom from Houston. It looks like I am going to buy a 928GT in California. I need to find a good and resonable shipper to use. I would appreciate any ideas or help concerning this matter. I have looked into
DAS and it was around $1495 for enclosed shipping. I went to RennSport II and used a gentleman who had his own truck and enclosed trailer, of course I cannot remember his name. Again, thanks for the help. Tom

I can tell who NOT to use... FWIW

AAA (auto brokers) Myself and others have been screwed by these guys.

Intercity... left my car sitting for almost a month before I finally told them to pluck off and went w/ another carrier.

Thomas Sunday... stopped 30 miles short of my place and said come get it we can't deliver to your small area (although many have previously), then they demanded CASH only, and on a Sunday morning or they would take my car to their impound lot and charge me storage of $25/day. Imagine me running around to various friends begging for $1600 to free my car.

As I'm sure others will chime in, try to drive it back home.

IIRC one of the site sponsors does a lot of pcars, try searching. They are higher, will not negotiate, but no complaints. I used BT Trans, they are a broker and I had very good results, to my door on time, kept me informed of progress by phone. YMMV. 03/06, (fuel was less) i paid $1700 LA to NYC, covered. If at all possible drive it.

So you are the lucky bastard!!!
That's one nice car! The 928 world is small indeed. That car almost was headed to Boston.

I had good luck with Intercity for transport from NorCal to Maine. I've also heard good things about Pilot Transport and Horseless Carriage.

whats wrong with this car?? If it runs good take a week off from work get your butt out there , and set off for home the long way, whats a better reason to have to get a nice road trip under your belt. I shipped a Land cruiser from PA to SLC 2 years ago 1200.00 via DAS. If the 928 runs good then you have no reason not to drive it. I just drove my 88 from SLC to LAS to LAX to Tahoe to Denver, just about 2200 miles in 6 days, ran great , and ready for more

Guys, you need to forgive me!! I am a vintage 911 convert!! First I started looking at the 78/79 models, told I must be crazy, so went for the GT. I would still like to have one of the first models!!

I would love to go to the bay area and drive the car back BUT due to prior family matters could not get out there till mid to late July and I do not think the seller would be willing to watch the car for another month.

The GT I purchased was the white GT that was offered on ebay. Two owner car with service records from day one. The TB/WP, tune-up, etc...were just done. The sad thing is, I have never even driven a 928, been inside one, a 79 I was looking at.

THANKS for the info on the shippers. I think I am going to use DAS. Tom

You made the right choice, so many of us have tiptoed into 928 waters only to wish we bought something better, newer or with a manual tranny (harder to find and more $$$).
More $$$ spent with a wise purchase at the beginning is very smart.

I'll bet someone would drive it out for you if you offered to pay their expenses and a little for their time.

Tom, I used Aaall States Transport (national outfit based in Iowa) last January. Phoenix to Minneapolis, covered truck, paid $1100. $100 to AaallState, $1000 to the driver on delivery. They called me every couple days for an update, dropped car in front of my house sealed in a big plastic bag! Good service.

That sounds like great service. I've never heard of a car in a bag for shipping, but that sounds like an excellent idea.

But I would second the idea of driving it home. I just did this in the spring and it was great. For storing the car until you can come and get it, perhaps one of the local 928'er would be willing to store for a bit for you?

You might start another thread asking if anyone would do that for you.

And sounds like you picked a carrier, so good luck with them if you end up going that route. -Ed

Tom, be careful with DAS, I've used them before for a Honda (moving) and they took nearly 45 days to shop across country. They do not hold to their "promised" schedules. I didn't have any problems with damage although I've heard from others that they have damaged the vehicles especially in their open carriers.

FedEx. All enclosed, no ramps (hydraulic lifts). Lots of info on all carriers on transportreviews.com.
