My Cruise Control works about a third of the time
Either works well, or not at all during a given trip. When it works, it holds well, so shouldn't be a vacuum problem (?). When it doesn't work, it won't engage at all for the entire trip. What could that be? A relay? Thanks, Tom

I think your first guess is the right one Tom. I've had the same situation with a pinhole vacuum hose leak - sometimes the cruise would work perfectly, other times not at all.
Try replacing the vacuum line that leads from the 4-way at the brake booster to the hard line that goes to the cruise control accumulator located way down under the brake fluid reservoir. While you're at it, test the vacuum valve off the booster to make sure it is working OK - it's a little cylindrical shaped thingy - you should be able to suck air through it in only one direction if it's working OK (note the way it is installed before removing it - air flow should be towards the booster connection).
If that don't fix it, you may have to pull the cruise brain and resolder the circuit board connections (or replace the entire box).
Let us know what you find.
