The car was built to promote a stereo company. The build quality is probably pretty good since it was going to be used as a show piece. I remember seeing more pictures of the interior and exterior somewhere.

fabio, ill look for the book and get the Authers name, he did alot of porsche model bio books, i just happen to have the one for the 944, its an early book like 84' or so i also have one he did on the 6 series BMW.
In the book he referances the 928 and turbo development and pictures the car and Dr. Porsche
i want to say it was a light matalic green for some reason even though the pic is black and white.
but i will look for it.

I agree w/ most.

Very early '78 MY, it would need to be a '77 build date.

Nice Early S model (ROW '80, or US '83)

I think that list would get you going pretty good... Those would be the basics for a good collection...

Now if I had unlimited funds to put into a 928 collection I would have Kermit, Blue82, Orange91, and Any super low mile GTS... That would give one of each body style with pretty much the lowest miles you can find (that I can drive...so no 5spds, so that leaves out Bob I's '89 GT w/ 320 miles on it).

I would then throw in a cool race car (got that, check) a '92 GTS (got that, check), one of the 4 door 928's, a Convertible (I would really like to add one of these some day) and a SUPER WIDE body car (I would like to add a nice one of these some day...I like the red POS's kit, but it would take $20k+ to make that car decent again I bet!)

That is just me... I would say one of each of the 4 body styles is pretty much the basics though to start with for a complete personal 928 collection and frankly that can be done for a fairly small amount of money. Think about it, you can find decent driver GTS's for $25k, you can get a really decent S4 for $15k, a really nice S for under $10k and a good driver OB for $5k... So for less than $55k (and maybe a LOT LESS depending on how much work you are willing to do) you can have a complete 928 collection.

I say for it to really qualify each of those cars much be highly presentable too...bordering on local show quality or better...

Once you get to thinking about it though...other than the pain of getting a '92 GTS into the USA, what is there to hold you back from one of each model year??? Garage space I guess... That would probably be the most expensive part of collecting 928's!

Hey, are there any really good pics of Pearlglanz out there. I saw the ones on 928 Registry, but those pics are not very good. I had seen some REALLY GOOD pics of that car when I first got into this 928 thing about 12 years ago...

There is a 4-seater, called the 1984 928-4 that was a 2-door on a lengthened chassis, with a different roof line. That was the official birthday present for the Professor. He never got a 4-door 928.

I happen to personally know Ferry Porsche's former chauffeur, and company fleet manager. He told me that there was never a 4-door 928 in the fleet - I'm convinced he would know!

However, a few 4-door 928s were built by American Sunroof Corporation (ASC). We know that a one of them with burgundy exterior and interior is here in the US. We also know of one in Amethyst metallic with black interior that is currently at the Auto Museum at Schloss Langenburg in Germany. This truck now resides with a collector in Karlsruhe, Germany, who I personally met last year at the German 928 Club's gathering in Stuttgart.

Seems to me I read somewhere that Porsche produced a few all aluminum 928's to be raced privately. I'd think one of those would be high on the list if it can be documented that they still, if ever, existed. If not, perhaps one of the earlier models that actually were raced; I think one led LeMans in it's class for quite a while at some point back in the early '80's.

I think this one is extremely collectable, given that overall is probably the most successful race 928 - with a win in the Nurburgring VLN, a 2nd place and a lap record in 1983-84 and many other top-10 finishes. The car was driven by works drivers - Gunther Steckkonig, Hans Clausecker, Knut Mentel, Edgar Doren...



The works Porsche S4 (Wehmeier & Castrup) of 1989 driven with some success in the VLN by Walter Rohrl, Knuth Mentel and Haam Lagay still exists at the dealership and is also collectable. I have not asked them about the price though...

Very likely one of them has been on display at Cayenne factory lobby in Leipzig recently. At least something similar has been seen there. Hopefully new factory museum in Zuffenhausen will have more 928 related stuff on display.

Have you actually seen it?
Reason I ask is the contemporary literature claim surprisingly high HP ratings for the Le Mans racer & as a 928s owner I wonder what he did to achieve them.
His lap times were pretty good so I assume the high HP quotes are reasonably correct. In 1984 he finished @ position 22 only 200Km behind a 930 (3662 versus 3475). About 30 dropped out during the race due to mechanical problems or crashes.
Photos under the hood would be very interesting.

Good thread & lots of great choices too.

Next Tues, we're going to our local PCA social, which is a bbq at Brumos Porsche. Brumos agreed to allow viewing in their private collection of cars, or museum, which is usually kept tightly under wraps. They have let it be known that they will only take in 10 people at a time, no cameras allowed what so ever! I was told long ago by their head of service that they have a somewhat special 928. If I remember correctly, supposedly a factory S4 that was used as a pace car, possibly the one at LeMans. I'll let everyone know next week what, if any, 928s they do have. I had suggested to the events coordinator in the past to see if it could be coordinate getting us a tour of the Brumos collection. He did great to coordinate it as a social barbeque too. There were only 60 slots at around $25 each that were made available, & it easily sold out in a couple weeks, 6 weeks ago!

I have not seen it, but read on a number of forums that the car is still in the workshop and that he is very proud of his achievement and happy to talk about it and show it. I believe the car was putting around 350Bhp on the crank out of the Euro S , according to him. Certainly doable, as Paul Anderson in the UK has proved...

As with regards to whether he would accept a USD1m bid...
