Post 911SC vs 928S

As I posted on the 911 list, I am trying to decide between a 1983 911SC (55,000 miles) and a 1984 928S (46,000 miles). The cost for each is about $12,000.

Are there critical maintenance upgrade requirements for the 928 similar to the tensioner, clutch and air box issues with the 911 ??

Thanks for your help

Paul,

Go for a newer model 928s4. There are plenty of nice ones in Florida that are dirt cheap. I think it's a supply and demand thing. If my memory serves me correctly, I recently noticed an '87 with 50,000 miles for $13,000. You will be much happier with the performance of a 928s4 or newer 928 unless your '84 is a euro s with a good set of headers.

Naw, naw, naw. You guys are making too much sense here. Let's endeavor to be as helpful as those 911 guys. Here ya go:

Water Good. Air Bad. Anything not a 928 sucks.

Haha. Real good advice they're giving over there (did you see that thread on the 911 board? Whew!) .

Actually, $12,000 for an '84 ought to buy you a near flawless, MINT car that will give you ZERO problems. Be sure to have it inspected thoroughly if you're going to spend that much for a pre-1985 928. For a low of about $14K, you'd be able to sneak up into the 1987 model year (updated bodywork, more HP, better brakes, etc.)

I bet some of our many dual 911/928 owners can give you the good objective scoop.

As I just posted on the 911 list, I am now the proud owner of a 1984 platinum 928S for $11,000.

The only serious deficiency found during the PPI by the local Porsche dealer was a defective fan clutch and electric cooling fan.

The mileage of 46,000 is accurately documented and the car is in excellent condition inside and out.

The only remaining concern is that the timing belt has never been replaced as far as I can tell from the service records.

Thanks for your help here and on the 911 forum.

All the best
Paul

Paul: Congradulations. But if I were you I would get that timing belt changed ASAP, it is 15 years old!

Wow, that was quick.

Perhaps it was the 'kinder, gentler' personalities displayed by 928 owners that swayed you? - hoo hah!

Definitely get the timing belt and water pump changed right away (I'm hoping you used that PPI discovery to further negotiate the price down?)
