Default do's and don'ts regarding cross brace

I've got my 1988 S4 up on Porkens lift bars and jack stands. Can I remove the cross brace to do some work then install it again before lowering the car without doing any harm?
I'm pulling the cam covers, fuel rails, already have the water manifold off, might need to remove one or both front tires. May be pulling the intake.
Going to finish up with installing supercharger with intercooler components.

Seems I read somewhere it was a bad idea to lift it with the brace on then remove it but I'm hoping I'm confusing it with something else.

Having just removed/installed a engine in MY 85' Heres what I did. I removed the cross brace while the car was on the ground. I don't think you can remove it any other way due to the stress. I remember reading that you can crack the windshield W/ the brace removed when jacking up the car but I just jacked one side a little bit at a time, then the other side. During the removal/install I did this several times and no problems. Again when you re-install the cross-brace the car needs to be back on the ground. This worked for me.
Not sure if you can do this while the car is already in the air

I jacked up my car and place in on Jack-stands then removed the cross brace. It was difficult but it did come off. I cleaned it up, did some work in the engine area and reinstalled it. Again, a tad difficult. I will be lowering the car in the next couple of day since I'm pretty much done underneath.

AFAIK, you're not supposed to tighten the bolts holding the crossbar until the car is on it's wheels. For lifting, I don't know.

The liftbars don't twist the frame as much as jacking at one jack point, but the frame still moves around. The doors are more difficult to open, for example.
