Weissach in AZ Needs to be Rescued
I've never thought about it until now, but I really think there needs to be a charitable organization that rescues 928s and other high line sports cars from ignorant or malignant owners.
Case and point:
This 1982 Weissach (sans luggage and in slightly rough shape) was being sold on the "lemmon lot" at Davis Monthan Air Force Base for more than a month. It has since been moved to the parking lot in front of headquarters where it currently remains and has been sitting there for almost three weeks.
The driver's window is down, the doors are both unlocked, there is various paraphenalia strewn throughout, the faceplate for the stereo is under the dash, the wheels are chintzy replicas of Turbo IIs with cheap rubber, and the owner apparently thinks that SuperTech oil is just what his shark needs.
Asking price $12,000 reduced to $8,000. There was an e-mail printed out in the car that details some of the more salient "facts" concerning the car. Not the least of which is that this car has the amazing 4.9L (Weissach ONLY) engine. I'm willing to forgive the ignorance, but not the negligence.
Oh, and as it would seem, the person placing it for sale on base is not actually the owner. I've got it in mind to contact the real owner and let him know a thing or two about how his car is being treated. I'll spare him the technical lesson. I doubt he'll much care though, given the treatment the car has already recieved.
We'll see. Donations for the fund to rescue 928s will be accepted in cash or parts.

Hey Stig,
Think so? PM me the guy's name and I'll tell you if it matches the one on the e-mail. I'm not going to publish some guy's info just because he has an indiscrete acquaintance.
Are you at all familiar with a shop called Performance Moterwerks in Anaheim? We've got a shop by the same name in Phoenix, but I figure it's a popular name (not a franchise). The message claims to have had the car serviced there.

Umm....I started a 928 Rescue already.
See the end of my siggy and PM me for details.
I would be thrilled to deliver a stack of scrip gift cards to folks at SATL.

I got ahold of the owner last night...he's pretty pissed about how his car is being treated. Glad to know he cares. If anyone is seriously interested in this car at all, PM me and I'll see if I can help this guy out.

Latest news...owner has had the car moved off base to a private garage (thank goodness). I'm seeing about a test drive this week. Who knows...maybe there's a luggage set lurking about that I didn't know of before.

I think I've seen that baby on DM last time I went...I'm always on the lookout for P-cars and seeing it in the lemon lot made me sad.
Teufel, do you traverse the U very often? Because there's a silver (IIRC) 928 and a red 928 I see periodically; perhaps yours is the red guy?

Any chance of the last 4 digits of the VIN and the edition # (should be on the plaque) for my Weissach register please.
$8k is to much, tell him to try $5.5k.

ausgeflipt-- I've never seen the silver car, but there's a white one that I've parked near to in the Tyndall garage a few times. I 'work' at the university and live on DM.
John-- I've since become familiar with the reputation of Greg and his dedication to the 928. Glad to know it makes it all the way accross the pond.
Roger-- the last four of the VIN is 1635. No idea on the plate number for sure, but the e-mail I saw said #33. I've already told him how and why his price was out of line. We'll see how ammenable he is to a realistic price. Sad how poorly these cars aged in value...I just would hate to see that factor put this car in the hands of an even less responsible owner.
Any chance you know what the full Weissach edition was equipped with. I recall that most never actually had the full luggage. Is it 4 pieces, 3, 2... Any other things I ought to look for that are particular to these cars?

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the update.
If you go and see the car the # will be on the Porsche crest stuck on the center arm rest.
I will use #33 for now.
The car came from the factory with the 3 piece luggage set, special paint and interior - two tone leather, Bamberg QTS radio (first ever quartz radio), front & rear spoiler and 16" gold anodised wheels. Package price was $5940 over list.
