Cleaning oil filler Cannister - can it be done on the car?
My 84 has a really dirty oil filler cannister. The old oil strainer was toast but I was able to get a used one in alot better shape than the original along with a new hose.
My question is can the oil filler cannister be cleaned out on the car without solvent getting into the engine? This would be done with the oil filler hose disconnected from the filler tube into the oil pan.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
EDIT - I know this maybe a dumb question. however, I am not sure if solvent could get into the engine from someplace other than the fill tube.

I don't think that will work -- the early cars usually have a hole in the bottom of that can that leads straight into the crankcase. I seem to recall that the euros are different as of some year or other, but I'm not sure. Pull the screen out and take a look. Maybe just use a rag soaked with WD-40 to try to swab up the muck? (WD-40 is ~50% Stoddard solvent)

Dave - I had a feeling that there might be a hole I couldn't see (because of all the buildup) that would require removing the cannister.
The rag method sounds like a good idea.
Thanks.
