Question Buying a '86 w/5 sp trans?

I'm looking at buying an '86 5sp with 97000 miles on its' ticker. What in particular should I look at when I do the PPI on the transmission? Any hint other than the usual.

Evaluate the shifter cup mechanism.

Late model transmission I think (?)

Check to see if it has LSD.

How to tell if it's working???

Shift linkage is not a really big deal if you do your own work.

Check for noises, primarily. Worry about clicking, grinding, growling, etc.

Bad shifting (grinding, hard shifting) may be trivial or major. A clutch that needs bleeding can really hurt shifting. So can worn synchros - which isn't as common on the '85 up as it is on the earlier cars.

Be sure to inquire when the Clutch was last gone thru - there is a habit of a little blue hose that likes to 'go astray'.

Shifter cup is another area of potnetial concern - if it feels loose (like your trying to mix a bowl of ______ (fill in the blank) - chances are the cup is worn - and likely to fail in the near future).

Thanks for the replies. Since I already have an auto I thought a manual would be nice addition to the stable. Still waiting for the vin # to see if it is an '86.5. I'll be down there in three weeks to look it over and see if it is worth the trouble. I want to do a restoration on a 928 but also want one available to drive while I do this.
Thanks again!

Just an update:

Car is a daily driver and the clutch hasn't been touched since this guy has owned the car. He has no previous history on maintenance. He has had the TB/WP done last year. All his work is done by a local shop with a mechanic who also owns a 928. It is indeed a 86.5. Biggest draw back is the tan interior.
