One other thing that I am considering is canging the factory electric mirros to Miata aero manual ones. Can't remember who, but someone on this forum did it and said it was basically a bolt-on. My pass side mirror is non-functional, so I've got to pull it anyway. I'm the only one who dirve the car, so once they are set they will be fine. Should save a few pounds?

I'll be keeping my comfortable seats as well

The cats will be going as soon as I move (to a non-inspection state!) and will be doing the exhaust as well. What exhaust set-up are you using?

Got a written warning yesterday myself, expired tag and no proof of insurance. Well, it was my company truck and they did renew the tag, just sent to 2003 stick to the wrong address. I had my personal insurance card so he let me off with a warning.

Something else that I've touched on from time to time, not seriously but it's interesting reading.

<a href="http://www.get113to138mpg.com/index.htm" target="_blank">Link to Fuel Vaporization System</a>

What caught my attention was not all the stuff under "Hardships" there, but this statement under the Q+A section:

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">Q: Am I going to experience a huge power-loss when I build and install a FIVS in my car?

A: No you will experience a substantial power gain, do to having 70% more

vaporized fuel in the combustion chamber at the point of Ignition.

</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">Can someone more knowledgeable than myslef read over the patent information and give an educated guess as to whether this would increase power?

I'm running MSDS headers with punched cats and stock pipes/muffler(s) - I will be swapping out the mufflers for something lighter and breathable and may upgrade my pipes to 3" all the way back. (My headers exit to 3") - Currently I am 2 3/4" piping. The PO used a collector to weld from 3" flange to 2 3/4" pipe - Messy welding - I think he was drunk!

- Non inspection states are diminishing. One way to go around that issue is to have your existing Cats punched out. Basically give the appearance of being there. There are two ways to look at this - bad and Good. Bad if your cats are new - those thngs are pricy. Good if your cats are old. I would look into a salvage yard and work a deal on "spent" cats. Take them home on punch them out. They basically become straight pipes once your finished.

For emissions, this gets a little tricky - You have to find a "friend" that can adjust the mixture within specs. Your car will probably run like crap, but it will pass. Once you pass emissions - go back and readjust the mixture. That's how I passed mine - Also - don't throw your smog pump away!.

I'm good for two years!.

BTW - The officer who stopped me, liked my shark - He said those things are fast - along with - Just because it's a Porsche doesn't mean you can go that fast. Oh Mercy! IF he only knew :-)

Knowledge is Power - thanks for the heads up on the FVS

Kudos

Where is the Smog Pump located on the 4.5 liter motors? Also..replacing the clutch fan with electric fans..would a dual set up or singal set up of fans be better for increase of power?
Thanks

The Black Magic fan is a single fan setup and seems to work well. I'm sure other setups (dual) or manf. woudl work as well, but this soultion is tried and true. I replaced the clutch fan on my S-10 truck with a Black Magic fan and it worked flawlessly for 6 years before I sold the truck. I did notice an increase in throttle response, but never dyno'd the truck. I'm sure there was some HP increase, but I had the feeling that there was a bit more of low end torque added as opposed to HP.

Not sure if the 4.5L engine had a smog pump. Anyone?

Another interesting <a href="http://www.hydrogen-boost.com/tech-info.html" target="_blank">link</a> concerning pre-heating the fuel before it's injected. Under the "Power test" you can see they got a 2.6% decrease in 0-60 times just by heating the fuel. And that was on a Hyndai Excel. Adding hydrogen to the intake stream gave an additional 2.1% decrease, or almost 5% reduction using both.

My only concern with these type of modifications is the EFI computer. Will it be able to compensate?

From what I can tell, the smog pump is driven by a belt from the mechanical fan. Follow the belt....

I did the Miata mirror swap.

It was no problem to cover the old mirror holes with the new mirrors. The problem is that you *do* need to repaint the doors or the car. The Miata mirrors will *not* cover the entire area where the old mirrors were. But you won't have to fill the stock holes... It's a pretty easy 2 bolt install.

(Won't make you go faster though...)

The car is getting painted anyway and I can get the mirrors for free from a guy who knows some guys who race Miatas in the SCCA Miata Spec class. Thanks for the link.

The smog pump should be directly over the a/c compressor When facing the motor - top left side. As KB mentioned, follow the belt that loops aroung the Mech/Manual fan.

KB, will painting your shark the same color?. Ive been down that road with other cars, and it's the best way to go!.

Yep, will be keeping it black. Too much expense to change colors. Although a Speed Yellow 928 or Moss Green one would be my favorite.

bcdavis,

I was wondering if you could tell me what year the Miata was that you got the mirrors from?

Thanks,

Speaking of getting more power out of an S2, I have an "S1", or another words, a verging Old Bugger (81, L Jet), and I am putting on MSDS headers with a Y into a pre-existing Borla Single pipe + muffler.

I am hoping for a significant change in power in the upper rev ranges from removing the cat, and changing out those horrible cast manifolds. Has anyone actually looked at these? Horrible.

I am also adding a 4spd auto to the car to replace a blown 3spd. This will be completed this week, and it seems to me that I may feel as though I have a new car with the headers, cat bypass, and another gear.

Your S2s already have these four speeds, but you can improve things with the 2.75 or 2.54 from the GTS or 89+S4 autos, respectively.

Anyway

Any Miata mirors will work.
Mine are from the "first generation" Miatas.
They were $45 for the pair...
A hell of a lot better deal than the Porsche "Aero" mirrors...
