I have used a Delco alternator on my 79 928 for over 10 years now.They are cheap,easy to find and charge better then the bosch units at low speed.I have also put the smallist pulley that I could find on the front of it to keep up the rotational speed of the alternator.

Have you been measuring the voltage right at the
alternator? If not, then who knows what the true
alt. output is. Remember there're voltage drops.

The alt. regulator is a pulse width modulated
device and not a series regulator, which means
it's on or off and varies the duty cycle of the
field current to effect the charging output.
