Recently the local PCA President called me to welcome me to the club. When He asked what model Porsche I had, I replied a 928. He said "I'm sorry to hear that". He then laughed(kinda)and explained the 928 is considered somewhat the "Stepchild" of Porsche to other model owners. I'm almost afraid to show up at any of the events. Should I go anyway and hold my own?

-I was a member of that group for a year, but didn't renew my membership.

I went to one meeting, where I was the youngest person there. Hardly anyone talked to me, and I even sensed a subtle undercurrent of pretention aimed at me because 1. My car was 15 years old, and 2. My car was a 928.

I don't need any of that crap; I'm not pretentious at all- I'm perfectly happy in my shark and in my '66 Ford truck with the rustoleum paint job. I bought my 928 because it was the one I wanted, not because I had anything to prove to anyone. Indeed, on more than one occasion, I have offered to peel the hood ornament off and give it to someone.

Thus I haven't been back. Besides- Boxsters look great in my rear view mirror...

That is really crappy, and he is full of it. The offical has no business inserting his opinion which seems intended to hurt you to some degree. 928's are Porsches like any other Porsche. They were sold at dealerships, they have a Porsche badge, and they do everything Porsches are supposed to do. There are a lot of people who appreciate them, and if he doesn't like your car he should keep it to himself. I would write a letter to the club complaining frankly.

I say go to the events and enjoy it. There are plenty of people who will apprecite your appearance. There will always be people who will ding your Porsche, or any Porsche that they don't particularly own; just ignore them, they are not worth your time.

Your Club President obviously doesn't have a 'clue'.

He should be politely educated that -

- the 928 was designed to replace the 911
- the 928 rides better than a 911
- the 928 was the first to sport the unique rear suspension
- the interior appointments in the 928 far outshine the 911 interior
- the AC works better in a 928 than a 911
- the 928 is roomier than a 911
- the 928 can be driven to outperform a 911 bt an experienced driver
- the 928 handles beter at high speeds than a 911

and last but not least...

the 928 has more bwwwwaaahhhh than any stock 911 will ever have!

Why can't we all just be friends.
Max is just down the road from you when he get's his sHARK back set up a an informal shark gathering. If you give me a 2 week notice I can rip down there with Pattycakes. Of course my son ,Zack the wannabe fisherman, will want to test your fishing holes. Someone told him about the GIANT Jewfish along the coast... be prepared.
You know if you look at my ECU/Computer removal post there was a lot of info on nearby(?)- 150 to 250 mile - 928 infestations. I wouldn't call for a SHARK Feeding Frenzy unless the majority of that PCA membership turns out to be like that weenie you mentioned. On the other hand, a once or twice a year gathering between the Austin , Houston and WAayyy South Texas owners would/could be a hoot. Hmmm, then there's Abbey and his S/C, Widebody project, George with his hyper 911 from New Orleans.....
Be kind of neat to have a show and tell, perhaps gain a few converts after someone in a new $45.000 plus Porsche finds out that the standard of Porsche comparison is with 20 year old looks, comfort, technology, handling, and hot rod performance that was and still is the 928 series.
I think after the initial shock a few might just say, " I could of had a V-8!". And the clincher is " yeah , including the flight out to San Diego, the 3 day vacation at same, gas meals, everything .... I paid $8600.00...your number".
Be nice and don't start anything with those nasty bumper stickers, you know...

Treat em' like they treat you!!! I know for damn sure Pattycakes didn't come from Zuffenhausen with a Everlast punching bag sticker on the dash and I'm pretty sure you didn't get one either.
Enjoy what you have it was and is still one of the best!

I'd report the jerk to the regional PCA representative, and then to national if they're not sympathetic. It is irresponsible for a person in a position such as this to make those types of comments, even in jest. It's a*sholes like this that give all Porsche owners a bad reputation.

Go and hold your own, then if that attitude is pervasive, switch to another region. I am not familiar with the Coastal Bend people, but have a passing acquaintence with Maverick (Dallas) & Hill Country (Austin). I also check out the lists of Lone Star (houston) and can say that Mav & HCRPCA are very open to all models. Lower than 928s in prestige (read original price and exclusivity) are 914s & 924/44/51 HOWEVER those models have significant followings and do very well at different events. Same w/ the 928. I think one problem w/ the 928 is that it had extremely low production runs, and thus not many advocates. In the previously mentioned clubs there is some good-natured joking about the various attributes of models (and drivers) and also some genuine snobs (AKA a**holes), true anywhere. I expected to be looked down on in Dallas, but to my surprise even some spanking new twin turbo guys were complimentary, and one (in his $135k 996) even said he misses his 928, that they were the best ever.
I think Austin is one of the largest concentrations of 928s in the country and many of them are in the PCA- the immediate past Pres. has 6 (six) of them, the present Pres. had 2 (think he went to the dark side recently), The membership Chair in Dallas club Races his 928.

Don't have thin skin, the car speaks well of & for itself- and of you by extension. I mean, it's not like you drive a Corvette, is it?

Thanks everyone for their words of encouragement and support. I guess I'm the lone 928 down here except for one down in the Valley Mcallen/Harlingen)that I recently heard of. I can take a little razzing, and not wear my feelers on my sleeve. I'm sure he was joking. I'll go and have fun. If any of you are down Padre Island way (north or south)let me know, Great Fishing and Seafood abound!!

Sometimes I'm quick enough in those situations. maybe a belly laugh, and a reminder that the 928 is the rich luxurious big step brother that the poor air-cooled children finally chose to emulate.

I'm not into the clubs or anything, but a thought just occurred to me while reading this thread. This could be a fun event or it could be very uncomfortable. If I were to be going to an event where I might be razzed a little bit because of the model of my car, I would be extremely prepared with a head stuffed full of real FACTS just in case there is a small melee of minds. You may need to whip out the hammer of intellect on them. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> Hopefully not. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
