Default switch in center console vents activated when vent set to closed

Took out the HVAC head unit to fix the sliders (success!), and I see there's a switch that is activated by the center vent when you set it to off. What does this do? I can't really say I've noticed anything happen other than that the center vent stops blowing air when I close it all the way, so I'm curious if something is broken?

You know, you learn something every day. My center vent is very easy to remove, and I just walked out to the garage and pulled mine out. Sure enough, there is indeed a microswitch that is mounted under a plastic fairing along the bottom of the vent; initially, when I read your post, I figured that this was something from the later cars. My '85 has it. I have no idea what this is, sans examining the WSM's.

Ok, 87-104 is the schema in the WSM. There is a description of what happens when you set the HVAC in various ways, but I can't really make heads or tails of it. Hopefully somebody else who understands these things can make heads or tails of it. I definitely found reference to the microswitch, but it simply says that is what it is, with no reference to what it does. Apparently that's left as an exercise for the reader.

Well its active in the vent only mode - if you close the console vent it opens something else - I think its the Def vents = reason: the door vents can each be closed seperately so if you also close the central vent you can possibly 'dead-head' the blower fan... This would be bad news for the fan and the resistor pack so it provides a backup outlet in these cases...

You can also use it as a test for the center flap (if it works)....since closing the main vent will cause the comb flap to "open"......I learned this working on Rich's since mine doesn't work....I must have played with it 20 times figuring out how it works!! Take off the outer vent...the close it...wait a few secs and open it again really quick...then watch how the comb flap slowly drops down.....kinda neat..at least for simpleton like me :>)
