oil leak question
Few weeks ago I posted about an oil leak. Now it's worse than before. When looking at the car from the front on the right bank and in the middle behind the oil filler there is a large now larger oil puddle does any one have any idea where it's coming from? And it's not by me overfilling or missing the filler neck because fron the last post I have cleaned it and not added any oil, but the puddles came back. Thanks Sal
Anywhere?
Ony way your going to know for sure is if you jack her up, and start looking.
There are like a million seals, and they all can leak.
The oil pan gasket seems common. Also, the all the cam tower seals. Well lacking a better name, the seals involved with keeping oil in the cam shaft houseing. The frount crankshaft seal. The oil pressure sender is in that area. The oil filter, maybe? The drain plug? (I hope not!!!)
Oil has this funny ability to migrate. I have a drip on the rear passangers side, that I belive is comeing from the driver side cam seal.
I have nother one from the steering rack that I've traced to a lack of a seal on the power steering fluid tank. Kinda amazing uh?
The forchant thing is these cars have a HUGE capasity for oil (about 8 US quarts), and well, it needs to leak alought before it even noticed it on the dip stick.

Must be either the oil filler neck gasket or the camcover gaskets. I doubt the camcover gaskets would eject puddles of oil at the top of the engine - but you never know. Thats about it for ways of getting oil into the valley.....
Don't know your MY but at least thats it for 85/86....??

filler = filter. Opps, may bad.
Do you have the preS4 or the S4+?
My guess for a pre-S$ would be eighter you don't have the seal for the filler cap, you have a cracked filler cap, you have a lose fitting to the oil filler cap, or maybe the PVC system has trouble.
Sorry I can't help more. That area on my car is so dirty, I ccan't realy be sure whats what, everything is coated in a layer of oil and grim. I didn't have the cork filler seal for a while, and it made a mess of everything.

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it. My car is a 1984 928S euro with the 310 hp motor. Erik, yes I have an oil puddle between the two banks, and it seems to have a little bit on the right hand side by the intakes. What's a little weird is that when I add oil to the car the oil filler fills up but drains really slow. could it be that i must wait for all the oil to drain before I drive the car? thanks again

As Bernie suggested it probably is the oil filler gasket between the top of the block and the bottom of the oil filler. Mine was leaking like crazy because the 2 bolts that hold it in place were very loose. While you are in there it would be a good time to replace the thermostat housing gaskets (2 flat gaskets and 1 O-ring), thermostat and t-stat O-ring. Drain the block at least partially before pulling the t-stat housing. Another common place for leaks up top is the distributor shaft O-ring (I'm not sure if there are more seals on the 'twin dizzy' setup). A leaking distributor shaft usually will run down the driver side frint or side of the block. If you replace the oil filler gasket take care not to drop anything down the gaping hole underneath the oil filler.

Last year, I spent a few days taking the motor apart on my '85 S2 5 Speed [that means "Euro" or "R.O.W", or "Gray Market Import", which means that my originally Austrian car is the same as yours~] because I was SICK of the leaks on the top of my engine. I eventually found out that the oil filler manifold was loose-...but this after I had purchased seals for the water manifold and the filler itself. I pulled the manifold and the filler neck, changed the gaskets, and seriously CLEANED! the valley of the V-
[why does that sound vaguely sexual?]
Anyway... if you take off your filler cap, and using a ratchet wrench extension about 25 cm long with a 13 mm socket, you can torque the bolts in the filler can down. One is outside, and the other is inside. Look at your filler- there are two rubber hoses coming out of it. One is above the other, and follow the lower of the two down to where it ends. Just to the left of this you will see the bolt that you need to torque, and again...the other one is inside the filler can WAY down inside the hole. Be careful- after doing this I remeber thinking that I would not want to have to try to drill out a broken off bolt from one of these two places~~
Well, if the gasket is bad, then you have to pull the fuel damper and its pipe, and the water manifold [which also means changing your coolant and oil]. Which is major, but not all that hard actually. It's just bolts and studs and nuts and bending over~

I had similar, and that was due to rotten/leaking gaskets almost all over - See the attached discussion.
