OK - I keep hearing so much about struggles with this and for some folks it seems it has been going on a good while... in states of partial installation or box of parts waiting for inspiration...

If someone did offer a kit with clear instructions (read, text, diagrams, pictures of locations & wires etc), the KE unit itself, all the wiring & supplies and relays fuses etc - would you pay:

$150 for the basic doors lock/unlock
$200 if you also want hatch opener, horn confirm & lights flash confirm

Not that I'm suggesting that I'll be doing it - but if you wanted a complete kit and instructions - I don't see how anyone could do it for less and make any money at it....

If that kind of money seems worth it to avoid the hassle of finding all the right parts, knowing that it will work and getting detailed instructions - maybe someone will find it worth doing.... thoughts... ? too much? good deal? (too cheap? yeah right...!).

Alan,

I would be glad to pay $100-150 for a basic entry system with detailed instructions that comes with anything else needed e.g. diodes, relay etc. And that is it its a luxury.

If its a necesity (e.g. broken door cylinder lock) I would pay up to $200 for the kit, no questions asked and I am Cheap. So I am sure there will be other people willing to pay as much or a bit more for a hassle free kit. Any feedback?

Alan, I would gladly pay $150-$250 for the types of complete kits you are referring to. I think many, many others would as well. This is a convenience that every new car has now, that we are all lacking and that would be used everyday. Remote entry is probably one of the most practical and useful mods we could make to our cars. But getting into our cars electrical systems still spooks most of us (me included).

As for SITM, can someone please provide a link to the make and model of the Comando that will be installed and the best site to buy it?

I installed the previous gen CS on my Explorer. It is pretty straight forward if you have experience. If you have not installed a security system before, I highly suggest getting help from somebody who knows 928s.

The nice thing about the 928 is most of the wiring is accessible at the central fuse panel.

I’m using the Commando KE-30 Deluxe 3 Channel Keyless Entry. They cost $46.79 shipped to Indiana. I used the following site, but I remember there were at least three others that carried them in this price range.

Yeah Kurt - I know its possible to buy all the basic parts for a lot less... but if you needed someone to detail it all out provide all the odds & ends and make sure it worked for all years/configs it really needs to be ~$200 for the whole thing... for those that can DIY obvioiusly you can get by with much less.

I have a feeling there is a demand at ~$200 but only from a small number of folks... and probably that means it isn't worth anyones time to do it ???

Hi Alan,

I wasn’t inferring that $200 wasn’t a reasonable price… The only reason I included the price in my positing is just in case someone wants to buy my spare. I have heard/read that these aren’t that difficult to install, but haven’t done one yet myself.

I’m hoping to try to pull this off while a SITM since I will be surrounded by a wealth of knowledge. Perhaps we could get Roger, Andrew, Paul or anyone else who has done this to help supervise.

Maybe we could do this Thursday afternoon after the Dragon Tail drivers get in.

After reading up on this a little, it appears that there are a number of different configurations depending on MY and alarms. It appears the connecting something to trigger the door locks is fairly easy and straight forward.

The tricky part if you will is adding the hatch release component and maintaining the door open interlock option. I don’t find myself fiddling with the switch while driving so I probably opt to just ground that aspect out. After that is sounds like it would just be a matter of some relays and some wires.

Since I’m just completing my carpet install and have my interior disassembled, I would like to ‘rough in’ some wiring to use later. I’m guessing a pair to the rear hatch and a pair to the console should suffice. I’ll have to do some more research.

Maybe I'll just whatch one being installed and take lots of pictures to post.

Kurt - yes do the wires now - absolutely. In fact I always wish I'd added more every time... So I'd suggest you add at least 3 wires to the back (its easy since you can get 3 wire flex more or leass anywhere and running 3 that way is no more work then 1 - and it looks tidier and more stock than a single wire anyway...

I actually bought a bunch of multicore cable and now I route 11 wire bundles everywhere new that I go. One by one I use them up! I'm tired of pulling out 3 wire sheaths so I can add 5 wires etc etc so now I just swap it for 11 wires everytime (thats probably overkill for most folks - but plan ahead!)

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the tip, I'll stop by Fry's or Radio Shack tonight to procure materials for the prewire job. Hope you enjoy your long weekend.
Cheers!

While working on my car today I realized I missed a grand opportunity to get this think prewired for keyless entry.

Since part of this will require lifting the carpet I just laid, I’m postponing it to later.

I did mange to prewire from the passenger hatch release back to the hatch latch, but I’m not pulling the carpet up front until later.

Anyhow, I’ve been working my a$$ off trying to get this rolling, and I ready to relax, suck done a few cold ones, and watch someone else do some work.

I’ll still bring my extra controller in case anyone wants it.

Hi Alan,

I bought Kurt's spare commando unit. What would you want to provide me directions/plans/consulting on installing it in my '90 GT? Center console is out, but ready to go back in (to be ready for SITM).....

Update: I mainly want remote door locks, but do have the relay you suggested I get for the remote hatch as well. My car has the stock alarm, but I consider it non-critical.

I'd sure love to have a remote unlock for my 81. I hate turning off my alarm and still having to use the keys to open the door.

Is it possible to tap into the center console lock/unlock button. (center right on my S4)
I mentioned it to the guys installing my alarm unit ages ago. Don't know if they used it.
But the Clifford Alarm locks and unlocks the doors

Ernie - no...

The way that works (alternating lock/unlock functions) wouldn't work and in any case this is non-functional when the ignition is off (at least it only locks - not good!).

Its easy to pick up the door connections at the alarm unit so not a big deal... I'm sure they didn't use it...

Alan
