Good question Bill. Never been there myself either, but I have considered this as well.

I always tap my brakes when someone is coming up behind me so the brake lights flash at them and get their attention. If you've been sitting there a while and they come up behind they may not notice if the lights have been on or off all the time.

Also, I always leave room in front of myself at lights in case the guy in back is coming up hard or the guy in front decides to stay there for some reason. Not that I could get out of the way in this case, but as Bill said, if you're moving at all it's less of an impact.

Sitting at a red light, and considering the speed at which he must've been hit, I'd stand on the brakes too. Getting pushed out into the middle of the road in rush hour traffic is not going to be pretty.

I have struggled with this seeming conundrum also and assumed, given room, that foot off brake would result in less impact. As I think about it now, and I'm certainly no kinetic scientist, the drivers danger comes from the transfer of energy into sudden forward movement. Hence whiplash. So that would indicate foot on brake to minimize sudden forward movement. On the other hand, it seems intuitive that the vehicle receiving the hit would fair better if the energy were allowed to transfer to movement instead of absorbing it all from the impact. If this conclusion is correct, which it more than likely isn't, then it comes down to do I want to save my neck or save my shark.

Absolutely agree with that. My wife got rear-ended and pushed into oncoming traffic.

There was a car a meter in front of me, so i did'nt want to get my car damaged in the front also.

There is a bump in the reserve wheel well, and the battery compartment does not open that easy, the hatch does stay shut though.

The headlights came with the car, i imported it from switzerland, afaik there is a company that does these kind of conversions down there.

Thanks for the comments.

Always wondered why the spare tire wouldn't go into it's bed without a good fight.
Thanks PO. Creator of the nicely wrinkled sheet metal under the tool storage area.
Sheet metal that started surface rusting.
