Question Computer/ECU removal questions.

She goes into the shop tomorrow.
I am fairly sure there will be some welding involved when the left quarter is replaced.
The Question(s):
1.) Other than disconnecting the battery before removing the computer are there any grounding issues?
2.) Should the ECU be removed as well or does it matter?

No need to remove, just unplug both the LH and EZK after battery.

Thumbs up

Max,
10-4. The comuter is obviously not a problem
with the major/only connector up front and easy to reach. I believe there are only 3 allen screws - 2 front, 1 back to completely remove the unit.
The control unit is held by two, #2 phillips screws but surrounded by hoses and other stiff things unplugging that puppy might be a little tough. Any tricks?
Thanks again.
BTW the red, 81'5spd is down to $5200.00 but I am cravin' a late 86 in red. Can't find the other one in town see it rarely.
Anymore show up in your neck of the woods?
John S. And a soon to be healed Pattycakes.

What all are they going to do and how long will Pancake be down?

Your lucky as Pancake is not overburdened with electrical devices so other then what was mentioned, you should be OK.

Other 928’s? I haven’t seen any, but I’ve heard stories of one or two from friends (one real interesting one, I will share when I confirm). DEVEK is getting close to finishing my motor (praying for this week) and then it will be time for some real long weekend drives. I may even join you for one of those Iran runs through the twisties. Last time I was through there I-10 wasn’t even finished yet (late 81)!

Once all of us TX 928 owners get our cars sorted out we should plan a get-to-gather. Being that we are all spread out over a vast area it would most likely need to be a weekend thing.

Kindest regards

Max

Max, What do you consider as "way south" Texas. There's a good sized group of 928 drivers here in Houston. You can't get much further south than that, the roads all turn to dirt once you get south of the Astrodome.

mike, well there are a few, not many, but a few black top roads south of the dome. Way south would be 35 mile from both The Mexico border and South Padre Island.

I hope to be in Houston soon, as that is were my 928 has been hanging out for the last year (Don McGills now Advatage Porsche) with the motor out of it.

How many 928 owners have organized in the Houston area?

Cool

Max, there's about 16 928 drivers on a list started last year by Don Carter. Not very organized, just seem to get together periodically and do stuff. A few of us will be at Advantage Porsche this Saturday for a free service clinic, food, and other goodies. Advantage has an old-school 928 mechanic who's giving free maintenance inspections/evaluations. Any time I can get something free for the "money-machine" I'm first in line.

There is the Lone Star Region PCA group, but they seem to be mostly into racing.

OK, I give up, Harlingen, Port Isabel??

Are we talking about the same Don McGill’s / Advantage Porsche/Audi on I-10, South of the 610 loop, like going out to Katy? If so there are two real good old time 928 Mechanics there, Don and Hans (Hans is the one in charge of my project).

They seem to have a few events like you described every year. Steve M.(P-car Service Manager) was telling me that they rent the track by Brian/Collage Station for test drive once in a while (I already have my name in the hat for the next one). I'm like you, if it's free I'm there!

See what you can do about getting everyone’s e-mail addresses together and send them my way. I will post a message later this week or next for any unknown or unaccounted for Texas 928 owners on all the boards.

Between Harlingen and San Benito.

Max, Advantage has two Porsche dealerships in Houston. One on the SW Freeway (HY59), and the one near me on I-10. The clinic is at the I-10 location. The SW Freeway location has its own test track out back for Porsche, Jag, BMW.

The I-10 location is right next to my office, I can watch the service from my window. There's a couple of 928's out back, but no silver. One is under a car cover - maybe yours? There's a Guards Red 1993 GTS that is almost new. Owner leaves it there, rarely drives it. I'm trying to find out if he'll sell.

Don Carter is the keeper of the Houston list. I'll see him this weekend at the clinic and get him to pass it on to you.

Talking

Max,
They found 3 NEW left quarters in Atlanta,
they only have two now!
Dropped her off this morning and we did a 20 minute show and tell for interior parts/leather panel removal. They want to do the strip to see if any thing else is damaged...NOT! To get a grand total - above and beyond - to update/boost the $3100.00 insurance check already in my hot little hand. Some new trim /seal pieces possible.
I plan on ordering a bunch of relays, trim pieces,
and fabricating a rear cover if I get a promised template.
The PO must have been German because ALL of the lighting trim was Guten Tite. Which is to say cracked, and of course on Monday I managed to find the tallest parking curb in the Kingdom of Texas, spoiler repair AGAIN !!!
Projected down time is 2 1/2 - 3 weeks.
I was concerned when I saw three of the shop guy's lookin' at her like she was waiting tables at Hooter's - all wrong !!! But to a man they went right to her rump and good right side and started fondling her, stepping back, checking out her 'lines' and nodding to each other.
I think I picked the right place, only time will tell.
I was hoping to hook -up with some of those shark drivers out of Austin/San Antonio for the sHARKANSAs trip but I noticed a lot of shark sales
out of that area over the last 3 months, Hmmm.
Might end up down around Houston, Padre Is, if things don't perk up around here.

John S., Max, MikeD
Start a thread, it's a good idea, except Iraan in summer.....? Might be cooler than San Benito, way down in the low 110s. Also check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dfw928/.
Maverick region Porsche (Dallas)& Hill Country (Austin) are both active on the tracks in D-FW & CS, as is Lone Star (Houston). Don't see the Longhorn (San Antonio) board very often. Go to http://www.pca.org/regions/zone_5.html for all the region links; all allow anyone to sign up for track days after members are accomodated.
MikeD- what's the URL for the Boggy Bottom list?

Mike,

The dealership on I-10 is the one I was talking about. The 928 under the cover should be mine, can you see the 993 wheels peeking out from under the light gray Porsche cover? It must be nice to be able to get paid to look at fine automobiles all day

John,

Sounds like Pancake is going to get a nice face lift. I read your post about the gash Some people have no respect!
I am in hopes to make it to one of the big 928 gatherings this year. I was planning on DEVEK DAY but I think at this point I wont be making it this year. The SHARKANSAS trip "might" still be a possable when is it?

Donald,

Thanks for the links.

There are just a couple of things that make a Way South Texas meet undesirable for the summer months.

1. 110F and 100% hunidity in the summer in the shade.
2. No hills, just flat black-top, you can see for miles and miles and miles.

I just think Porsche cars were made for hills, tight and sweeping turns

Humm, Austin sounds about right

Max-
I agree on the venue- even have the route from the Hill Country PCA Bluebonnet Tour- it's probably still on their site. Besides Iraan always leaves that "sweet" smell of money on you for days!
Don't forget to e-mail me when you head for Houston.

Max, I can see your car. It's sandwiched between a raggedy 944 and a classic 356. Happened to look out the window this morning just as the dumpster truck was doing its thing. Nothing much to worry about. The driver picked up everything that fell out, didn't look like too many big pieces of junk, I'm sure a little Bondo and paint will fix everything up like new.

Just kidding, it's safe and sound. What all are they doing to it?
