Does anyone know of a tool that will fit a Boge shock? I have Lisle tool, but it is only 6.5mm and the Boge shock is 7.2mm. I can't seem to find the right size to hold the oblong end of the shock.

are you asking about a spanner wrench, spring compressor or something altogether different?

Something altogether different! This is the tool that is used to hold the shaft of the shock while the nut on top is tightened.

BTW: the spanner wrench advertised on e-bay can be bought from Harbor Freight at half the cost with four spanners.

Hi, Bill!

I'm glad to see that you are still out and under!

I have used several different approaches to holding the stud on a shock when I didn't have the right tool.

1) Straight-jawed ViseGrips of various sizes, sometimes held vertically, sometimes horizontally.

2) An adjustable wrench.

3) Make a tool. Find a piece of heavy-wall round steel tubing or pipe, and flatten the sides in a vise, so that you have two flat sides to hold the stud.

4) Doesn't help in your case, but if the tool is bigger than the stud, you can use a flat metal shim to make the tool fit tightly enoug to work.

5) A nut-splitter.

6) A hacksaw, if the old shocks are being junked.

7) Cut the rubber away and hold the stud below the nut with ViseGrips.

Don't forget to lube the nut well with penetrating oil as far in advance as possible.

The problem with 928 upper shock mounts is the need for a socket that has the ability to turn the nut while holding the shaft with the flats that bill mentioned. Another approach is to use an air or electric impact wrench. The impact tightens or loosens without turning the shaft.
