Three Wheelin'
on my 86, Sender is near oil filter. Bell shaped thing with two wires on it. It mounts vertical.
I'm not sure of the location on a 79, but the same part # sender fits 78-88.

After a few hours playing, I took the oil breather off the oil filler (the lower pipe, after a while the smoke cleared and everything seemed to be going well, so I thought I'd take it round the block, 1/2 way round and I can't see a thing behind me, so I gets it home and it is smoking like before, the oil bereather I left disconnected to ensure the engine was breahting correctly, it there anyway of telling if valve guides are worn before I start taking the heads off, is there one side that is easier than the other to remove insitu?? or am I goin to have to pull the motor, if so I'll think I'll pass and stick with the 944/924's and buy another 928 later on.

Do the leakdown test, thet should qualify the rings a bit better. Otherwise take it to a shop that knows 928's.
Good luck.

Adie,
Don't dispair quite yet, there are other 928 Guru's you haven't heard from. As you can tell, these engines are not the simple old V8's from an early 60's Ford or Chevy. Unfortunately, teardown/inspection may be in your 928's future or maybe you can get a used engine at a decent price? I know you have everyone scratching their head. Hang in there, the 928 is worth it.

I'v read your posts a few times and can't help but wonder if your valve stem seals or guides were installed correctly.
It has been my experiance that when a ring set goes bad it will not show up equaly, but on one cylinder only, maybe two but that is rare (unless they were installed wrong to start with).
If your oil problem is equal across both banks of cylinders, I would start to suspect the last work done (cylinder head rebuid in your case).
Does the 79 928 only have one crank vent hose?
Do the valve covers not have a vent hose on them?
Cheers

I'm following your line of thought and at this point I can only say that the heads were SUPOSEDLY rebuilt, the rad was meant to be new, there's a reciept for that, the screen was new, a reciept for that also, alternator (also a reciept) yet nothing for the heads, so I will take it for granted that the heads have not been touched, either that of if the new guides were machined then they mismeasured int eh reaming process, hence my thought also on the guides, I'll hang in a little longer but I don't think it looks to hopeful.

Adie,
If it is your valve guides or seals, you will be able to see the oil at the end of the valve guide when you pull the intake tubes. You will also see a lot of oil build up on the backside of the valves. If that is the problem, the heads can be removed while in the car. BTW the shop that rebuilt my heads said the valve guides were a weak point as they were short and made of bronze. The replacements were still short but were made of bronze/phosphorous which according to him will wear much longer. My rebuild cost $250 per head.
