There are more than a few sections of the 'old road' that parallel the new roads. Most are maintained and relatively few are patrolled well. There may be opportunities to make significantly better time on the 'old road' sections due to traffic and other problems on the way.

There's a whole culture for 66 that's a lot of fun if you have the time to go that way. A quick websearch will net you logs, stories, travel guides, watch-outs and traps, as well as what hotels to stay at and where to get the best 66 food along the route.

Go for it!

If you change your mind and go through Denver, you'll find I-70 coming out of Denver and into Utah one fine experience in a 928. I heard of someone who found a 928 was just purring at 125 along that road which is what life is all about isn't it? Of course I forgot his name, but he swears you'll not regret that route. Comes out of the mountains and through some great medium speed scenic stretches. But he said to cool it through Utah around Salina. I don't know what he was talking about though.

I took delivery of my car in Denver in October 1997, and my first 928 driving experience was the route Ron refers to. He probably took I-70 to 50 west (the 'loneliest highway in America') when I turned south on 15 at Cove Fort. I stopped just south of there for the night, and after a headlight adjustment was off in the pre-dawn hours so I could cruise the Virgin River Gorge on 15 south of St George as the sun was just hitting the formations. That section through the gorge is a corner of Arizona that has little or no patrol on it, perfect for a 928. I was tempted to loop back around from Mesquite and do it again! It's that good. Las Vegas is a relatively short ride south from there, on your way to SoCal.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I'm sure the Colorado / Utah route is awesome. I really wan to do the Route 66 route.

Maybe I'll plan a road trip out to Utah to visit Bigs and the rest of the gang out there (assuming I'm welcome ) for another year.

Eric,
Quick stop at the Grand Canyon maybe? Kind of on that Route 66 (side trip) path... Come on down through Phoenix and we'll have half a dozen cars hook up with you for the final section... AND you can still test your AC in October!

You have to go back don't you? Take one route there and another route back.

Excellent!! This is what I was hoping to accomplish with this thread. Find all the caravans & see how many we can hook up with.

Friend of mine from Phoenix visits us every July. I get a kick out of him complaining about the heat up here. Something about 100 degrees with 100% humidity?
