I tried to take a picture of the traffic jam of bolts in the oil passage this morning but no luck....the camera keeps focusing on the wrong items. I'll pry them out tonight or take a picture from the bottom of the head.

Another interesting thing I noticed....the oil residue in my catch can acts like it's alive, following my magnet around. This is the goop that was the last to drip from the oil pan, and it's got a lot of very fine shavings in it. I'll try to get a video of this in action. When the magnet nears the oil, you can see the particles line up and try to reach the magnet. It's actually kind of cool (if you ignore why the oil is loaded with this stuff for a second ).

Dave,

I don't mean to sound pessimistic here.. The fact that you're going for that rebuild is fantastic.
I'm jealous that you have the time and the knowledge to even attempt it.

But realisitcally is rebuilding this worth it? It sounds like you've already had another problem before
with that motor. I'm not saying the motor's jinxed, but isn't the wear and tear of these cumlative
failures taking it's toll on it? Not to mention the risk that there will be contaminants from
the previous problems that you are unable to locate and remove.

I hate to even think about it because of $$, but have you looked into rebuilt/used motors?

Maybe you're just attached to that motor after all you've been through together. I can understand
that.

BTW, thanks for posting all the progress, very interesting!

For the record, the item that broke this time wasn't an original part...it was a replacement head. So if it's jinxed, the jinx is leaving with the broken head.

I don't have any more time that the average person. I work out in the garage from about 10pm until around 11 or 11:30 each night, after my wife and kids are in bed. I take my time, read everything I can, and figure it out as I go along. Honestly, it's not difficult.

I don't consider this a rebuild. It's a repair. Every place where oil passes will be flushed and inspected. If the pistons and cylinder walls are still in good shape, I see no reason no to move forward.

I was devastated with the timing belt failure happened, and pretty upset when this happened. I let the car sit for a long time and started working on it when I was good and ready. It's not a daily driver any more, so I have no pressure (other than wise cracks from Andrew Olson) to finish it any time soon.

Spreading the work over time and hunting for bargains makes the budget impact something I can live with. The support (and random donated parts) from Rennlisters seals the deal. I couldn't do this without Rennlist.

Good luck Dave,

just saw your second missfortune and admire your determination to fix it.
I can understand it took a while to build the energi getting started.
Following your previous thread after the TB failure I'm sure you will pull this one off

Dave,
Sorry if I missed it, but were you planning on doing the same kind of detailed, step-by-step documentation of this repair, like you did for the timing belt failure repair?

First off, I need to fix a bunch of broken links in my website. I was in the process of moving many of the pages over to the 928 Owners' Club server (since everything loads faster) but never finished it.

As for this project, it repeats much of what I did before. However, last time I didn't track the process of pulling the engine. I'll take pictures when I put it back in and use those to create a "how to pull a 928 engine" page. Everything will be cleaner (no fluids spilling).

Are there specific items you'd like to see detailed?

Re/re the engine is a good one. I'd like to see lotsa pics showing the heads coming off and the various passages that need to be cleaned, things you wouldn't ordinarily be able to see without disassembling, to the extent you do end up taking it apart. Anything else you might find noteworthy. Not that alot of this can't be found elsewhere necessarily, but to have it available in one place and MY specific would be nice.
