lol...I wouldn't pay $16. It sounds like it runs well, doesn't leak and is in decent condition; how about a flat 10? big drop in price yes, but probably closer to the value (if not more).

Bob and ATB: I guess if I were desperate, and the market wasn't as it is for the 928, $16K would be okay. Thing is, this car has more miles on it and the owner is asking for more than the other cars I have in sight. The owner pretty much told me he wasn't going to budge, and he really didn't care if he sold it or not, he would just keep it. He said a guy flew down from MI to look at it, but the deal fell through. He poopoo'd Kelly Bluebook.
OTOH, the guy did say he has put in nearly 20G for repairs/replacement of torque tube, breaks, timing belt, and various electrical issues. He is trying to recoup the cost.

Malcolm, man, I can't imagine putting this car above 100mph. Maybe I might have felt better if it were MY car and I knew its limits. The car felt "old." Not so old that panels were going to start flying off, but you get my drift. I just didn't feel confident in it.
Maybe something else was wrong with the car; I tell you guys, when I punched it from 50-80, it felt like stepping on the gas in my '96 Pontiac Grand Prix (V6). I definitely did not feel like I was being pinned to my seat. Come to think of it, the '86 manual 928S that I missed out on felt just as sluggish, if not moreso. I've just got to drive more 928's to compare them.

+1 to what Kevin said, but I think you're also going to have to either drive a stick or figure out how to get the manual out of 2nd gear.
You need to be up in the powerband to feel it in your seat. You also need (IMO) to get over the idea that it's someone else's car and you don't want to drive it like that. It's a PORSCHE 928! It was designed with this kind of driving in mind. If you expect to buy one you need to know that the one you get can do what it was meant to do. Maybe it would be better for you to drive someone else's car (someone here?) before you continue. I'd be willing to trade cars with you for an hour or so .

Not sure if the 928 was built to "feel fast." Especially when you've just stepped out of a lightweight nimble little machine like the Lotus.
The 928 just hauls. Curvy 2 lane roads. Highways. Anytime there's no traffic enforcement or traffic.
I happened to follow a Corvette (C-5) and Ferrari 348 duo down I-95 for a little bit.
Was just closing the gap up to them, whilst still in 5th gear with my long 2.20.
And I glanced down at the speedo an I'm doing 95. Didn't mean to go fast. Just squeezed the throttle a little to keep the mini-vans from getting in front of me.
Never felt fast at all.
Might want to try a mid 80's Euro 5-speed, Eclise. Have heard those have a sprightlier throttle response.

I agree with Ernest - the throttle response on these cars (unless modified) is not their forte. At least it wasn't on my 2 and the other couple I've driven (all autos tho - this would make a difference I think). Instead, the 928 comes alive when drving on long twisty roads and eating up long stretches of highway. It is a heavy car. My Mustang feels much more nimble off the line, which is what it was designed for, but nowhere near the confidence level on the curves or at "speed" (which to me is in excess of 110 or so). FWIW, I found an '88 S4 to be more responsive on the throttle than either of mine, however.

FWIW, I bought my '88 w/unknown milage for $5500 (around 120K estimated based on documentation and broken od gear) and have since put another $2K into it in the past year. I would say that I have another $5 in engine and other maint issues that need to get taken care of and I am happy overall. Then again I am doing the work on my own if I can and it takes some time w/two kids under the age of 2yo. My car is also not a daily driver so it can sit till I get those maint issues resolved. I do drive it once or twice a week though and haven't had any issues outside of the known electrical grimlins.
The deals are out there to be found but you have to look. Also the PO of my car knew that it was going to someone that was going to take care of it and took a low offer to get it into my hands vs someone elses. I have been told by quite a few, if not everyone that I have asked that I got a GREAT deal.
Getting back to that sluggish feeling, you really need to use the gears and the heavy pedal to get it up and going. My VW GTI feels much more responsive but I know that it is a different ride. There is no way that the GTI could come close to handling what I have thrown at the 928 that it shrugged off so effortlessly.
Maybe look at Bill's car or come take a look at mine and see the difference between a $7700 S4 (mine) or a $13000 928 S4 is like. I am pretty sure that you will keep looking. If this guy is not willing to budge maybe he should keep it. I know Bill from local GTG's and he is a great guy and took great care of his cars. Great 928 resource as well, too bad he packed up and moved to that other coast.

This car sounds like it is not a great example. The hard start and the non impressive acceleration from 50-80 tells me that it is likely down on power. Keep looking. I drove several 928s prior to the one I purchased. When I drove mine it was night and day especially from 60-80mph. My heart rate jumped up right with the tach, it did not feel like a Pontiac Grand Pre.
Find the right car. Price is not always a great indicator of how good the car is. This sounds like someone who has paid a Porche mechanic most of the money that he is trying to "get back". Of the 928s I looked at, the best one was the cheapest, and that is the one I bought. There are still deals to be had.
Not to say that this car is not "worth" 16K, it is just that right now you can get a much better car for less money.

I know, I will take my lumps for this comment at SITM, but really, why is $16k too much for an 87?
I guess I hope to learn something at SITM as respects condition and value. Either I way overpaid for mine, or it is in much better shape than most for a 88 S4 Auto.

Get a 5 speed if you can afford it. Big difference in my opinion.
If you want red, search for red. If you want the 5 speed search for A red 5 speed. You have to be patient as there are not a lot of these cars around.
