After the fact. Porsche never chromed 928 (or 944) wheels, and they discouraged people from doing so.

My first 928 was a '90 GT that some PO had chromed the wheels, pitting along the bead sealing areas made for a slow leak in both rear rims. I'm not sure what the process is for de-chroming wheels is (internet says muriatic acid...) or what the cost is.

Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid (HCl) - available readily from swimming pool shops. I think you’d want to experiment with concentrations. Remember when diluting acid never add water to concentrated acid to dilute it - only ever add concentrated acid to water to dilute it. And don’t breath the fumes - will sure clear out your sinuses or worse. Cheers. DaveO

I'd have to dig into my stash of old 928 wheels, but I believe I have 4 chromed 9" D 90's sitting around. As I recall, the chrome is not looking so good these days, but they could be re-finished. PM me if interested...

De-Chroming aluminum wheels can be done, I have done it safely and properly; no chemicals AND no damaging to the underlying aluminum. You have to get these wheels Plastic Media Blasted, it will not be cheap, each wheel to de chrome will cost about $350.00, (what I charged for one Honda and then later one Lamborghini wheel which needed this service)(and what I charged 10 years ago). It can be done, but, most customers won't pony up.

Thanks for the tip. I will keep that in mind when i take them to a shop. I just want a fresh/good surface to be powder coated....if that means all the chrome comes off then there is a price.

if you look at them close up there is almost a black under coating..primer like coating underneath. My hope is whomever did them didn't do a good job.
