Question Rust Repair Methods???

Hi Sharks:

Has anyone achieved lasting rust repair on small areas that last and look good? I have a small rust spot at the lower edge of the right rear window. I would like to fix it without removing the window. The rust starts beneath the rubber seal, and spills over about an inch under good clear-coated paint.

I still need another opinion. The shop i got the estimate from wants to cut out the rot and weld in a new panel and paint the spot.

Hi John,

Thanks for the pictures. The approach of that body shop is a very good one. I have more time than money. So, I will grind out the rust rather than replace the panel. If someone paid for my labor, I could and would have the new panel installed instead. I have decided against using a special rust primer like MarHyde One Step. The pros would or should never paint over rust. I have removed all the necessary parts to fix it right.

What a job! I am grinding, sanding, rotating wire brushing with dremmel tools to get down to the bare metal. It looks next like primer, spot putty, primer, always sanding. Then, the fun begins on figuring out how to use the multi-step Dupont paint and clear coat (grudgingly provided by the body shop that painted the car). “Fortunately” there are a few rust spots on the rear hatch beneath where that part of the spoiler goes to practice on. Getting a seamless transition onto the existing paint seems like an impossible dream.

Then, it looks like a PPG primer, and 5-part acrylic enamel flexible paint for rubber, metal, and plastic that I removed… and I just wanted to get the exterior trim looking good again!

See: Rear Side Window Installation??? post for more information.

So much for just painting the trim… Any ideas or tips? Anyone?
