OK, I must confess -- my dearly beloved V-1 just 'spazzed out' with signals from 'every which way' in downtown Salt Lake City...
Signals from all directions, in a hotel area, part of the time... circling the area...
I don't recall what kind of vehicle was in front, however.

Piqued my interest in the comparison study...

icsmike -- tooo funny! There's not a 'hidden message' there, I hope, for this fellow 628'er!

The Passport SR1 I have (two of them) and the ZR3, have their receivers mounted at the licence plates.

For laser you are probably right due to license plate targetting - although if you are in dense traffic a higher mount may give you more chance to detect scatter earlier - but you'd be at somewhat lower risk then anyway...

However for radar I think a high windshield mount with a clear view forward and ~back is better. Yes the forward view will be inherantly better than the rear view - but thats also the area of higher risk. License plate area mounted radar detectors are going to be shielded by any cars in front (moreso on a low down 928) and this will affect detection range. For you in the land of major laser threat - license plate may be best... However if the biggest local threat is K/Ka radar (certainly true in AZ) a high windshield mount is better IMO.

Of course dual remote mount sensor detectors are also significantly more expensive.

Alan, yes. the big threat here is Laser. Radar is not nearly as lethal because of its diffused pattern and ESPECIALLY its noisy nature, making it possible for spilt a signal to be reported 2 miles away by inexpensive detectors and detectors with inadequate exclusion logic. A detector anywhere in the car should pick signals up well, and only one unit should be needed. Laser is more precise. If you shine a laser pointer at night, onto an object 100 yards away, I do believe you will see what i mean.

Yesterday tooling in NJ highway, (Rt. 80), saw white crown vic in opposing lane with an all white mini light bar. Looks like a white roof rack from a distance.
Bastages are now using clear lenses. Can't even look for a glint of blue or red.

Waiting for the price of the 9500i to drop.
My friend bought a V1 ages ago and I was very surprised about how small the unit looked in real life. The pictures make that unit look HUGE.

Last summer the highway patrol held a speeding sting on a busy section of highway in my area. They ran out of squad cars to pull people over, friend of mine was stopped by a trooper driving his privately owned Dodge Ram. I also saw a red Pontiac Grand-Am pulling people over.

I like the PSA that warns us to keep driving to a well populated location at night if we suspect a bogus cop pulling us over. Meanwhile most of the officers on the highway in my area are in 100% unmarked vehicles. I wonder what would really happen of you keep driving 10 miles to the nearest gas station at 2AM before pulling over.

I use a V1, I have gotten two tickets while owning it, one because I had it off, although I got that one dropped because I was in traffic and there was no way he could say who was speeding and who was not.

The second was in Idaho and got nailed with pop, no way out of that one, caught me coming around a blind corner, and bang, nailed.

Other than that it has saved me many, many times...

When I was a kid I worked security in retail a bit. I was constantly told to hide so that thieves didn't know i was watching. I was ultimately moved out of security because I was "too visible" and "didn't catch anyone stealing".

Many years, even decades later, I am a certified Information Security professional, and every bit of good literature on the topic makes it very clear that prevention is the goal, not "trapping". Those unmarked cars IMHO are specifically designed to cherry pick the ripest revenue-generating scenarios. Nothing to do with public safety, or preventing breaking of the law.

All of this reading has reminded me of how much I have missed my 1st V1 that was swiped from my son's car a couple of years ago when I had loaned it to him...... so earlier today I ordered another V1 along with the remote concealed display just in time for SITM!
