I see that NAPA sells remanufactured 928 water pumps for $72.99 (plus tax and shipping) with a core charge of only $11.

I know that Ell recently installed one of these and has had no problems.

Is there any reason (mechanical) that I shouldn't get my pump from NAPA????

P.S. No, I don't have any connection to NAPA. The other parts for my upcoming timing belt job will be from the Big Three.

well, son of a gun.... The water-pump price from the dealer up here in Canada was $200.00, and the core charge was $400.00.

 

It took me 11 hours with help to install the timing belt and water pump - if I paid a little extra to get it from 928Spec - I am sure it was money well invested.

The NAPA one comes with the limited lifetime warrany too, where I think the others are only two years.

 

Just called a local NAPA store. They're calling their warehouse/supplier to see if they have any available. I'll let you know what they tell me. NAPA sells the new units for a whopping $600.

 

It may be worth noting that there are no STANDARDS for what makes a rebuilt , a rebuilt. No standard bearings , no standard seal it is up to that particular " rebuilder " to decide what to use or IF they even change them . The rebuilder which we at 928 International use and have for the last 11 years also is the rebuilder who rebuilds water pumps for Porsche . Could some other rebuilder do it as well .....possibly . The question is " Do you feel lucky " If you decide to buy one from Napa I will pay you $50 for your core !!! That makes it a $34 pump from Napa , now that is a deal ????

Lifetime warranty...who pays the labor (which I am sure is MUCH more than that pump) when the bearings and seals that are not "standard" take out your timing belt!?!?!? Or the impeller decides to take a trip thru your cooling system in itty bitty pieces? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> or are you doing the labor yourself?

I will scrimp on some things...then....there's water pumps and timing belts, and the like!

 

I've always been satified with NAPA.

 

IMHO...

There are things in the life with a 928 that are 'other supplier' that are worth taking a chance on (Anchor Motor Mounts is one that comes to mind).

The potential impact of a poorly rebuilt Water Pump is NOT on my list of choices given the EXTREME negative consequences for pre-mature failure.

I will throw my 2 cents in. I just replaced my plugs, rotors, caps, intake manifold rubber couplers, belts, hoses, rebuilt the tensioner, replaced the alternator cap and hose. I am still looking at getting three complete sets of tires to play with this summer.

Since I have purchased my two p cars, I have found that as soon as you say Porsche, the price doubles. I accept this because the parts cannot be found everywhere. NAPA has stayed in business over pricing the likes of Auto Zone and other whole stores for one reason, quality. Saving 50 buck here and there by using VW parts works for me. I won't go to a budget store, but I will shop wisely.

The local NAPA didn't have them and couldn't get them. The option of giving them my old pump for them to rebuild wasn't an attractive option. YMMV.

Just ordered everything from 928 Specialists.

 

For what it's worth, here is a reply I got from NAPA when requesting info on their 928 water pump:

My understanding was that metal impellers weren't used anymore b/c of their ability to grind into the block due to a failing pump.

Is this right?

 

That's why I specifically asked if it was metal or plastic. Seems to me to this particular rebuilder might not be "in the know" on that issue.
