Post Powder Coated Intake

Got my intake back from the powder coaters today and WOW! I am very happy. The color is "black chrome with clear" Word of caution to anyone wanting to do this, the coaters need to bake the intake before applying the powder to keep from getting "Gas out" spots from the gases trapped in the casting during the bake. If not you will have funny spots on your intake. Yes this is common with any magnesium casting.
I will be using red silicone couplings similar to the ones Bernie got from Turbonetics.
Just wanted to post to get some feedback on the color. It is very close to the meteor metallic paint on my car.

Cool

Tim- Dude that's going to look HOT!

Please...Use orange or bright red connecting silicone tubes! And buy some HOT chrome or bright stainless steel clamps for the intake tubes.

Normy,
Thanks! I just bought the bright red silicone tubes 5 minutes ago and I am actually polishing some SS clamps at the shop.

Tim,
Classically understated. Some will think it's plain and to shiny but, I agree with Normy, that's hot lookin'!
Can we pry as to YOUR prep requirements and a
ballpark figure on cost?

John-Goride,
All I did was sand blast it with 36 grit silica (high pressure 120 PSI) then 120 grit silica (lower pressure 75 PSI) and it was smoooth as a babies but(minus the giant craters!).
The cost is relative, normally between $100-$150 is what it would have cost. But I deal with coating and plating alot so I "almost" feel guilty about what I paid (read almost)!
Thanks for the compliments but I wont be happy till I put her back together.

Hey Tim,
Very elegant.......
That color should look nicely "in place" on your shark. Look forward to seeing it with all bits in place.

HOLY CRAP that's nice...looks good Tim.

I really want to do this but I'm thinking understated too. Is there a color chart to choose from or do you just take a stab at it?

Also, I'm guessing you have to prep the pieces yourself? If so, you guys rent a sand blaster?

Questions...Questions...always Questions.

Tim,

I sent my cam covers and intake parts to Vic at Applied Powder in California. No prepping done by me. He is going to do a satin-silver p-coat to the intake and and a black hammertone finish to the cam covers. The cam covers on most 928's are much more rough and pitted than what a smooth powdercoat can handle. It can be done, but the pits and imperfections will show. So, a hammertone finish with it's own built-in texture makes the overall look of the cam covers more appealing. The intake components are smoother and can handle a satin or smooth powdercoat look.

I hope to have mine back in a week or so.

BrianG, I like your color choice, looks like it will match your car pretty well.

Tdelarm, You can look at color charts online or at your local powder coaters. You should find plenty in the L.A. phone book given all the EPA crap with painting, they can strip your parts for you if you don't have the facilities.

Greg86.5, I almost went with the hammertone silver/black combo on the intake, I am glad I stayed with the black chrome though. Make sure you post some pics so we can check it out when they get back!!
By the what color interior do you have ?
It is unbelievable how close the black chrome is to matching the Meteormetalic in real life!!!

I almost went with the hammer tone also but decided against it when the painter said that the "texture" would hold greasy dirt. He recommended a smooth finish for that reason, in the engine bay. My painter had a huge number of 2"X 4" samples. There's any color in the rainbow.

I will say, however, that there ended up being a few of what look like small "water-spots" on the plenums (plenii?) even after they outgassed them twice. Nothing major, but there....
