All someone has to do is look at the fuse/relay panel and you can tell the Porsche is at least electrically complex. All the fuses and relays have a purpose, but the sum is far more complex than it needs to be.

It seems to me that the 928 was overengineered. Rather than use the Lotus approach of adding lightness, they added complexity. And rather than go back to the beginning to think how four or five functions could be handled efficiently, they developed four or five independent functions.

I think the 928 is overly complex, but that doesn't mean I don't love it. It just means I need to learn more.

Some folks "get it" and some folks don't. They are all just cars that work off of the same principle. If you think about it, take your basic knowledge of a car or engine, then apply it to the next car. You're still gonna have the same issues with the same names.

Anyway, I could be wrong, but the whole airbag thing is WAY over rated. Yes, I prefer them, but I would be quick to argue as to which is safer, an air bag-less 928 or a full bag Camery. I think I'll put my money on the 928.

The other thing I do NOT condone, is trying to convince someone who cannot and cares not, to appreciate the 928. I say good luck in your greener pastures of car ownership. This is not the car for you and I would be doing you and myself (as well as any other 928 fan) an injustice to sell you on something you just don' "get".

Sell it! Best of luck in your alternative pursuit.

Per the thread title, I would love to own this car!!!

Also have to say, that of all my classic's it's the most reliable, and that includes two amercian cars (vette and a lincoln convertible).
Dude, you are comparing wrenching yourself on the F-car to having an expensive mechanic on the P-car.......give me a break.

and about the color,

That coral color someome posted a pic of in another thread about this car has grown on me. But I hate to think that this color is pink in the sunlight! I guess if you cant see the physical car, go to a paint store and look up the color code in their book to see what it really looks like.

Well if you didn't do a good job of buying your 308, you could easily have dropped similar $ into it when you got it. As I recall, you were kind of on the fly with the 928, and got some "surprises" with regard to the suspension and other things? Any import car can get ludicrously expensive if you don't do your due diligence when purchasing, or go into it knowing what your in for. Buyer beware.

Tru Dat!

"I would have had better luck the first time around, having gotten it and then asked permission..."
I tried that...didn't work..except for the fact that I had to practically buy my wife a crapload of things to make up for it...

The 928 IS complex...when you don't know much about them...

=======

SO...I really want to know WHY he is selling the vehicle in less 60 days of purchasing it?
Major surprise? Bad color in light? Too much money to maintain?

Usually, it's passing along a problem that has appeared and is too expensive to deal with.

yep, thats certainly a possibilty, this would be one the next owner would be very wise to get a thorough ppi by a knowledgeable 928 wrench. Of course it could simply be that selling the car is cheaper than divorce court

I don't think there is a Ferrari with 200k miles in existence that is used as a reliable daily driver.
I don't have much expirience with Ferrari's, but about ten years ago I picked up a Testarossa from the dealer after a major maintenance. I got two miles and the timing belt broke. It was $32k to rebuilt half of the engine.
Fortunately it wasn't mine and I did not have to pay that repair bill. The car had 16k miles on it.

Here's what I've learned from this entire thread:

Cost of Car does NOT equal better quality. In fact, less expensive cars seem to be MORE reliable.

So here's a crazy thought, shouldn't one expect a high priced vehicle to be also more reliable? or this too much to ask?
i.e. check out the boxter forum. There is a sticky on top of the forum 'BOXTER ENGINE FAILURE SURVEY' 97-2004. Cars with < 50K having engines completely lost engines. and I don't buy the theory that ..."well if you can afford one you can afford the maintenance"...NO car should lose a TB at 16k miles needing a $32K rebuild...

I think this is why the japanase sport imports are becoming extremely popular. May not have looks albeit the NSX(look out for the Nissan 350ZX Nismo) but they RUN for a long time! or maybe just longer...

Off soap box...

Default old ferrari vs newer porsche

it seems to me that at this point in time, where all of the 928's are at least 12 years old, and most are almost 20 or older, most of these cars are not being used as daily drivers, commuters., ie 12K plus miles a year. Rather they are the second or third car of most owners. That's the same kind of use of an old 308. Granted the 308 was not intended and was seldom used as a daily driver which I guess is why there are so few of them with over 80k miles, where are a ton of 928's with over 120k miles.
to me the 928 is really primarily a highway car; it eats up long distances with very little wear and tear on the driver, which may explain why so many of them are relatively high milers.

my main point is that if you take an average to good general mechanic and have him pop the hood of both cars, I think he'll say that the older mid engine 8 cyl ferrari is a simple car, and will feel confident that he could fix most anything. The porsche, or at least the S4's and later look and seem a whole lot more complicated, like some were saying peeling an onion just to get to where you need to go, and complication turns into more money.

also, the porsche guy told me that the 928 was the test bed for alot of technology tried which either succeeded or didn't. That costs as well.

Hi all, yes this is my GTS. Somebody buy it! What other GTS have you ever heard of for $20K?

I'm offering the opportunity to step into my shoes, get this car for what I paid for it, and invest the time and/or money, depending on your skills/interest in turning wrenches, to have a really beautiful GTS.

I jumped to buy this car in March, and it was a great buy, but the timing was poor. We're getting ready to start a remodeling project in which we'll lose the garage and have a dumpster sitting in the driveway. I have to pack up my workbench and tools and store everything for the duration. I have another Porsche; four cars altogether counting this one, and not sure where to put them while all this is going on.

On top of that, my boss says I'll be spending a lot of time this summer in Atlanta. My company recently acquired a company based there, and I'm on the merger integration team.

So, that's my dilemma ... stash the GTS away until I have the opportunity to start working on it, or pass it along to someone who knows these cars and can give it the love and attention to bring out its full potential. I'm hoping ROG100 might still change his mind, or one of the other regulars here would like to take advantage. Ryan, if you want to come by and look her over, send me a PM and let's set it up.
