You can find a Dynojet in your area by checking at
<a href="http://www.dynojet.com/lauto.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.dynojet.com/lauto.shtml</a>

When you go to the dyno, take along a blank floppy disk and get a copy of your dyno data files. There's a free run viewer that you can download on the Dynojet web page that will allow you to view the files. It's very handy for viewing and analyzing dyno runs later on. The viewer will allow you to overlay up to three different dyno runs, zoom in on any part of the charts, print them, and a number of other things. The data files are also very small, which makes it easy to post or e-mail them. The run viewer program is can be downloaded at

Thanks Z.
I was able to find 2 dynojets nearby from that link. I talked to 1 of them and I would have to wait till next week to get on that one. I'll call the other tomorow to try to get hooked up this weekend.

What do I do when I get there and how do I do it? What I really want to do for now is place the engine under load in a controlled environment (i.e. not LA streets) to make sure it is healthy. Will they give me any other readings than HP/TQ? .....maybe boost, fuel mixture?

Thanks,
Andy K

They'll strap the car down on the dyno. Depending on the shop, either you or the dyno operator will operate the car while it's on the dyno. Since your car is an automatic, you want to disconnect the transmission downshift cable at the throttle bracket. Also disconnect the electrical plug from the kickdown switch located under the gas pedal. Doing those two things will prevent the transmission from downshifting on the dyno, and will allow you to get a reading over the whole RPM range. Put the shifter in "3", and then slowly accelerate the car on the dyno until it shifts into third gear. Adjust the engine speed with the gas pedal to the RPM that you want to start the run at, and hold it at that RPM. When the dyno operator is ready to start, just floor the pedal until the engine gets to the RPM point you want to stop at. Ideally you want to do two or three runs right in a row and use the last one of the bunch for comparison purposes. That way things will be fully warmed up and more consistent when comparing to when any changes that are made.

The air/fuel mixture can be monitored by most Dynojets. Some places charge an additional fee for that and some don't. You definitely want to do that.

The dyno will probably not have the capability to monitor boost. Some types do, but most don't.

Having the dyno run data files saved to a blank floppy disk can be very handy to have, and doesn't cost anything. Take advantage of it.

It can vary a good bit from one place to the next. It also depends on if you're just getting a couple of pulls to check power, or if you're on there by the hour for tuning.

Andy...let us know what you find out.

Z, is the downshift cable located right at the TB at the pivot arm? There are 3 or so cables connected right there. Is it the center one that runs down the back of the engine?

...just double checking.

On the S4 and later cars, there are four cables attached to the throttle bracket that's bolted to the intake manifold. One of them goes to the gas pedal, one goes to the throttle body, one goes to the cruise control, and one goes to the automatic transmission. The one for the transmission is at the top driver side of the bracket. I'm not sure about the arrangement on the earlier cars off hand.
