Default Increasing Friction on the Side Mirrors

Frequently, when I close the door, driver's or passenger's, the mirror on that side drops down (angles down) slightly (just the internal part, of course). This is the only time it happens; never during driving. Is there an easy way to increase the friction on the mirror to prevent this from happening?

You're talking about the mirror glass, or the mirror housings? If the mirror housings are loose on the door, you can "pop" the flags out of their detentes by rotating them towards the front or rear of the car to reveal a hex head screw that you can use to tighten the mirror base against the door.

Wow, Unreal. I was going to post today almost same problem. When I shut my door my mirror glass turns in.....I might get in there this weekend depending on what has to come off. If the door panel has to come off, it will be put on the winter projects list. Ill let you know what I find

I've had this problem for a long time and am about to replace my mirror glass.

Anyone know the ins and outs of tightening the mirror adjustment pivot mechanism so that the mirror doesn't adjust from side view to "roadkill view" after every door shut?

Thanks!

I took the mirror apart a bit. There are no adjustments in there. The motor area that might possibly have some potential for adjustment is completely sealed with a rubber glove. I didn't have the guts to tug at the glove to see if there was any hope of access - didn't want to risk tearing the thing. I did find one of the three little screws that hold the mechanism to the housing had broken threads on it. I wonder if this may have been a contributory factor.

Mirror is back on and I have no plans to go back in. Got the screws in tight now. I'll post an update if the tighter mounting screws make a difference.

James...........the mirror motor housing is screwed to the outer metal housing; 3 screws IIRC. The glass is then secured to the motor housing by means of a turning mechanism accessed from the bottom of the mirror housing with a small screwdriver.

it's a result of someone pushing the mirror by hand, which means some of the little gears inside are stripped ... you have to replace the motors...

I got those screws off to detach the outer housing with the motor from the rest of the flag. These were easily removed with 8mm socket. But after that there were no accessible bolts or screws within view on the motor/swivel area.

I was able to see three small screws coming through the back of the mechanism but they appeared to be set from within the area encapsulated by a rubber glove. The opposite side has 4 rivets. Couldn't see anything to tweak other than screw the little 8mm socket and little tighter, but that doesn't look like it should affect anything.

So there is a way to remove the rubber glove thingy? I just don't see any way of accessing the motor without tugging on and/or cutting 21 year old rubber.

why do you want to remove the rubber.........its purpose is to seal the fixed side of the motor housing to the moveable side. If, as Heinrich suggests, someone has forced the mirror manually then the platic gears or arms may be stripped/broken and require replacement.

These parts are not sold seperately so a full mirror assembly is required or find someone who replaced their flags with aeros and may sell you some parts..........now where did I put those boxes?

So the answer for "fixing a loose mirror" is, drum roll please........

you can't.

Thanks guys. Good information.

Yep.

I had the same problem - it was a broken tab on the motor attachment assembly.

Had to replace the entire motor.

A short-term fix would be to shove something into the attachment assembly to prevent the mirror from moving.

yes you can...........I sold some mirror parts to another fellow CDN to effect repair.

If you take the glass out and post a pic perhaps we can determine the issue and possible parts to fix.

Be aware that early flag mirrors (pre S4) have a different drive mechanism (with a single motor) and glass attach than later flag mirrors (dual motors).

S4 flags and Aero mirrors have the same motor mechanism and a similar type of glass attachment.

Early flags have the 3 (?) prong spring mounts to the big motor plate while later mirrors use the central rotating lock ring style.

This is one reason why upgarding an S4 from Flags to Aeros is quite easy, while upgrading pre-S4's to Aeros is much harder electrically.
