Default Outboard A/C relay help

I went to Radio Shack and found a lone relay in a stapled package that had 275-218 handwritten on the package, I looked at the relay and it had the same specs so I bought it and installed it last night, I went to test it this morning and no dice.

I followed Bill Ball's instructions in another thread and wired it like this:

OEM > Radio Shack relay
1-4
4-3
5-7
6-6
7-5
8-8

I believe I bought the wrong relay on the relay it says
OEG SRE-402DP 12VDC
5A 240VAC
5A 28VDC

I found this radio shack link when I searched google for SRE-402DP:
http://support.radioshack.com/suppor...oc14/14757.htm

Says type is SRE-402DP and the RS part number is 275-0214? If I bought the wrong relay what does the real 275-218 relay have written on it? Maybe I can make this one work?

Ross-

I'm looking at a Radio Shack relay still in the package, the Radio Shack part # is 275-218, and on the relay itself it says Omron LY2 12V DC. On the back of the package it says:

10A at 110V AC or 24VDC

FWIW, the HVAC relay instructions I saw also mentioned the Radio Shack 275-249 (I bought both since I don't know which one is currently preferred) - the relay itself in that case says OEG on it, then OMI-SS-212D, then 5A at 250VAC/28VDC.

I can shoot pics for posterity sake if that'll help.

I went to a different radio shack and they exchanged the already soldered relay for the right one, lets try this again.

Ross:

So, the AC is back to working order? If so, I'm glad to hear it was that simple. That relay is defective so often that when my AC stopped working I just replaced it without testing anything (this was years ago - I've learned a bit since then). But my AC still did not work. So, I put my finger on the high pressure port and pushed in the valve - nothing came out. I had a lost all the R12. Since then 6 out of 10 cars I have seen for AC problems have had a bad relay.

Everything seems to be working fine, I wonder what I get to fix next.

The first relay you bought was a four pole, double through. The pinout on the case is different. If you had the pinout for the first relay, and connected it with the right pins, it would have worked. Most likely, you connected two of the wiper pins to incorrect wires. Glad you got it working now.

I would not recommend the 275-249. Although it is a DPDT, it has the circuit board mounting pins, not the loop pins. It is also only rated for 5 amps, which is 2 amps higher than the original. The inrush current from the coil saturation of the clutch is higher than 5 amps, for a short duration. Go with the big ice cube style relay.
