Default how to fix split in pod?

just finished repairing some cracking and dying the seats with materials from leather world and color from GAHH?(california company that supplies fabric and stuff for foreign cars. it came out very good.
I'm going to tackle the spit in the dash pod next.
what filler should I use. I have some leather filler, but I'm wondering if there is something more specific for a dash pad, I think it's vinyl. I got some stuff from leather world which will match the grain, once I fill in the crack/split. have to believe others have tried it.

read one thread and it seemed like pods can't be efficiently or satisfactorily repaired. most just do vinyl covers. hard to believe but that was the thrust of the thread.

Rixter's fixed pods look good. Not quite factory new, but pretty damn close for a few hours of work. don't know if he's still doing them, you might want to contact him.

Default self repair?

I just fixed some cracks in the seats and redyed them; it came out pretty good, and I'm not the handiest guy around.

what I have is a verticle crack or split in the pod, pretty much down the middle bisecting the pod.

I was thinking about using the following procedure and wonder whether any of you have tried it:

1. fill in split with leater crap repair stuff (same stuff I used to repair the cracks in the seats; thought this might be best since it's more flexible than putty or fiberglass repair;

2. do second go around after the material dries and cools

3. before second layer dries, use leather copy texture product to duplicate the texture on the pod on to the leather crack filler

4. base coat of dye with adhesion additive

5. final coat of dye (whole pod) with duller additive

anyone try something like this?

Hi Rick,
On mine the crack also had raised edges. To make it look acceptable I would have to cut or grind down the high spots then address filling the defect. Yours may not be as bad. Finally, I think the real issue is how long a repair will last because of thermal expansion/contraction cycles. I eventually gave up and had Rob Budd cover mine with leather and it looks very nice.

You can try 3M's Automix line line of plastic repair products. Or you can use what is essentially the same stuff from Evercoat that's labeled "Maxim." You may find your best bet is to fill the cracks and then have it covered.

takes a lil practice and some time, but it's not THAT high on the difficult scale
the owner of this pod has had it for 2+ yrs and has to my knowledge not had a problem and he lives in Fla

My Black 87 pod was refinished by Dan (PO did it) and it looks great. If he still charges $150 it is not worth trying yourself IMHO.

Think about it, the heat absorbed by a pod is enormous, causing a bit of movement. The key is to fil with something that won't open up or sag or expand. It probably won't happen. The way to fix would be to fill and recover. Not a simple process. I think the interior guys are the ones to listen to.
