I'm a friendly sort... one might even say gregarious, so I honk and wave at other Porsche drivers and, unless they are also driving a 928 (or perhaps a 944), at least 9 out of 11 will either look away, look straight ahead or look right at (through) me without a flicker of recognition. I also noticed, in browsing through "Excellence, the magazine of Porsches", that there was no mention anywhere in the magazine, including most, if not all, the advertisments, of the 928, even thoughn there was a lengthy article on restoring a 914, which is (was), IMO, almost as far away from the "Porsche paradigm" as is the 928. What's the deal here? Is it as simple as ***** envy? We are, after all, the much better looking older brother, the "hunk" of the family.

My personal opinion after almost 20 years in the PCA and many years before that in the Corvette club = snobbery.
You are not one of the "elite" if you don't drive a 911. I've actually heard people say this (911 owners). I'm not saying this is every 911 owner, but I'm almost willing to be the majority.
There are very few 911 owners IMO who are 100% true enthusiasts. Just like most Ferrari or Corvette owners, having a car with that particular badge means something in their world - this is why they purchased the car.
In the Porsche wold there is this great animosity towards each other. The 944 owners are in such great numbers they pretty much take care of themselves. At PCA events there are so many 944's no one really notices the air coold crowed ignoring them. 928 owners are so few and far between we are often the 3rd wheel at events.
Not to mention the 928 was supposed to replace the 911 and failed to do so (reasons why is a totally different thread).

I stopped waving, flashing, or nodding here lately at other P makes, and will never look back. A pre-emptive ignore. Never felt better. Except for Ed. I'd flash him......sorry Ed.
Edit, 944 guys wave back waaaaaay more than the 911's.

Pcar owners just don't do the same waving thing as the Jeeps, Harley-Davidsons, and boaters of the world. I've gotten used to it. I found a white 1988 Carrera Targa just like mine in Chicago, and I was right next to him at a stoplight. He didn't wave, so I initiated it and finally waved.
I find it strange, this non-waving business...
On a side note, I love all Porsches. Even the diesel Porsche tractors I saw in Regensburg, Germany.

Interesting topic; I wave and flash at all P cars and always get a return. Then again living where we do its a rarity to see another sports car let alone a P car.
Unfortunately, I never see another 928 unless its a planned event.

Of course I jest. I flash and wave to any cool car, Porsche or not. I really think that many 911 drivers, especially late model drivers, do not know what is flashing at them. Honestly.

When I had my 2000 Beetle I would always wave very obnoctiously at every 911. A few of them waved back. Well, come to think of it, most of those who waved back were driving convertibles - probably thought I was gay.

around here it's about 50-50
I've had at least 3 911 owners I can remember actually ask me to pull over so they could check out one of my 928s..
and then there was the guy I parked right next to at the post office in my 928, I told him "nice 996 I love that color"... his response "it's not a 996 it's a 911" then stick up his nose and walk away
it's always a coin toss
don't get me wrong, I love something about every Pcar, and I would eventually like to own a 930... but I'll stick with the 928 crowd ANY day of the week

Our 928 is accepted and welcomed alright.
There's just not alot around and many don't know what it is...
In fact I've noticed it's more like newer Porsches vs. the older ones now-a-days, heh.

I tend to think that a big part of the problem is that the majority of owners of newer pcars are posers and aren't real enthusiasts. Heck I bet better than half of those, wouldn't know a 944 from a 928. and suspect that most don't even check their oil & fluids leaving such mundane efforts to others.
That said – I’ve had mostly positive responses with owners of older Porsches and often beat me to the first wave. I frequently see an older guy in an late 60’s 911 that almost always waves at me when we pass one another.
