I got the new ball cup on Saturday (thanks 928 spec.!) I spent 5-6 hours on this job yesterday, but it's done now (the right way) and I should be good for another 20+ years.

One more reason to do it the right way: If you just replace the bushing instead of the whole thing, it is a *&^%%$%^$% to get the cup off. Under normal circumstances the reason you replace is because the cup has popped off by itself. If you replace just the bushing and then the shaft snaps, you have to get the cup with the brand new bushing off of there. This part took me well over an hour by itself.

Back on the road, lesson learned.

I just had this happen to me this weekend. I was going for a "long ride" today. If any of you know me, "long rides" around here are rare for me, I hate traffic, and I live in one of the worst traffic areas in the US!! But I had an excuse to stretch the legs.

I got about an hour and a half away from home. Went to turn around and start my route back home. I did the all-time great non-stop clover leaf (sideways the whole way!! ) and get back into the 4 lane traffic, revved up to around 4800 rpm and went to speed shift (with the short-throw, short shifter ) into 3rd..... The shifter grew about an inch... and I HAD the tie-wrap trick on! I slowed down (coasted) and got over in the slow lane still fishing for a gear. No 3rd or 5th, later I would find out no 1st. But I somehow found a way to get into 4th, thank God for displacement!! I limped home and found this. I had completely forgotten about the ball cup assymbly. Later I found out I still had 2nd but couldnt get 1st. So the wire tie saved me and got me home.

I doubt these (on order now) last 20 years, but it is always smart to do the wiretie trick... it will at least make it so you can get home!!

Great thread, should be added to the newbie FAQ page.
