Since we know the noise goes away when stationary when the clutch pedal is depressed (tranny and TT stop spinning), Andrew's idea to repeat the test while driving would seem like a good one to try. The rattle is probably not loud enough to hear while driving, and I don't think Matt has ever reported hearing it while shifting gears.

In all likelihood it is the TT bearings. You know, as the old saying goes, when you hear the sound of hooves beating on the ground, think horses (TT), not zebras (tranny). I'm just not familiar with this sound. The fact that it never rattles under load, as far as we can determine, puzzles me.

I would have thought that under load the shaft flexes a bit (being wound up) and would take up the slack in the TT bearings if they are worn. When the load is removed, the shaft relaxes back to where the worn bearings have clearances to move back and forth.

Well I think it’s going to be a torque tube, it does look much easer on the 5 speed over my 91 auto we did last year. The rattle is not really loud but there all the time, I never hear it while shifting. I was hoping their might me a way to verify what was wrong but the noise transmits down the TT and tranny. Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming I thought I would change the tranny /Diff oil and see how that looks before pulling the TT.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt-
Can you take a small video like what I did in post #15? It really helped me to diagnose it. It's amazing how accurately you can tell where the noise is coming from. Plus it will give you and others an opportunity to hear the noise rather than having you describe it.

I just wanted to let you know we found the problem, looks like bad torque tube bearings. Tonight Bill Ball helped me pull the TT on my 88 5 Speed, we have been trying to track down this rattle for some time. The rear TT bearing is noisy and has a bit of play in it. Also you can spin the TT shaft like a top my rebuilt 928 International TT feels great, I cant wait to install it tomorrow afternoon and get back on the road.

Thanks Bill for all the help!

3 hours to get the TT out. Hardest part was the top bolts on the front of the TT. The clutch is in the way, but some Gearwrench tools were able to work in the cramped space (barely). After that, a couple of the upper bolts in the rear required our 4 foot 1/2 inch drive extension, but they proved to be a lot easier than on the AT as the bolt torque is FAR less. New TT goes in tomorrow afternoon.

This is good news. I will try and stop by today and help with the installation of the new TT.
