The vendors that sell catalytic replacement straight pipes need to charge extra to help pay the big fine that the govenment is going to eventually give them. The government just smiles and lets this stuff go on....keeping track all the time. This is a favorite trick in Califonia. They take all the ads they can find...every 6 years or so....and nail everyone they can find. There is absolutely no provision in federal law to de-certify any vehicle....regardless if it is used for off road use or not. The guys that advertise have big time exposure....and will eventually get nailed. Think jail time! The guy at the local muffler shop is not as likely to get caught.

Roger,

Thats a pretty good price! Your website wouldn't sell me on anything though. 928 motorsports pipe is very nice and I'm sure alot went into developing it. I'm interested in seeing what the shop comes up with and being a part of designing it should be fun. If it's crap I'm only out $25 and a little horsepower.

I'm running a y-pipe that came I got when I got my 78'. Not sure what the performance gains are Ponies(HP) per Buck ($), but I like the sound with my Borla Cat-Back when I'm in the upper quadrant of the rev range.

But I also keep the origenal Cat-Y-pipe tucked away in the Garage for emissions testing. 10 bolts is a quick half hour under the car and I'm legal again.

There doesn't need to be any provision to 'de-certify'. DOT has no authority over vehicles not used on public roads. California is not the rest of the country.

"California is not the rest of the country." - HA! THANK GOD!!

I have Daves Cat with mine, but I removed it and use the bypass. Btw, that cat is basically a straight pipe with a few restrictive tiny tubes inside!!! GREAT if your required to have a cat, which being grey market Im not, even in VA!! :thumbsup

Is Louie Ott's original X-pipe rendition patented? There are lots of Xpipe designs "out there". While nuances of design may make a difference in performance, I'm not sure exactly how much. Someone who is handy with a welder probably could do a credible job making their own, I'm guessing. But a dyno would help.

This is true........ but there are also guys out there that feel no compunction to about ripping CD's and DVD's.

Situational ethics, I guess.

Goin totally OT here ... but I have bought HUNDREDS of CD's at a buck a piece. Every time I do, it makes me chuckle that the RIAA puts people in jail for making copies of music. I do believe that ripping and selling is reprehensible, but personally, I see no real reason why I would feel bad about making copies of my own CD's.

I'll tell ya' what, spend a couple of months taking an already outstanding design (thanks to Louie) and making it produce almost twice the horsepower by learning a lot about fluid dynamics, build and dyno test over 10 different designs (hundreds of dyno runs!), settle on the one that makes the most power from idle to redline then find someone to produce it knowing you will never even sell the quantity that Mustang owners will purchase in one month. Considering all other limited production performance products, $400 to $500 is downright cheap. Have your local muffler shop do their best and I will gladly put mine up against it on a dyno...if yours beats my power increase, I'll pay for the dyno. If mine beats yours, dyno time and lunch is on you and no McDonalds!

FYI, the size of the chamber, the merge collector, the distance from the exhaust ports, the diameter of the bends in the pipes, the flange design, the catalytic converters...all are custom made and critical to power production. These are designed as true maximum performance items, not a "close enough" attempt by Joe-Bob's Muffler and Laundromat Emporium.

BTW H2, we did this project with Louie's blessing and assistance. He no longer wanted to build them and I decided that if I couldn't make a reasonable horsepower increase that it was not worth doing. Our design has already been copied here and overseas.

H2, X-pipe is patented/copyrighted/trademarked/whatever by somebody else. Louis actually received a cease and desist order from the IP owner. If you read some of the X-pipe fights on this forum, you will find that Tom Cloutier, Dave Lomas, and Dave Roberts had Louis' blessing and help in their designs. Nothing Louis did was revolutionary, he just helped refine a common design idea for better use on a 928.

Heinrich, copying your own music is completely protected. Copying music for other people or sharing on the internet is generally legal, unless you make a profit or intend to prevent the rightful copyright holder from making a profit. There is a lot of gray area depending on how you word what you are doing and what your intent is.
