Default My stick leans left

My stick shift is too far left (5 speed). 1st and reverse are all the way against the left edge of the opening, and 4th/5th are in the middle of the opening. As I am doing some clutch work soon I would like to get this centered while I’m under there, so the shift boot will stay on, and all will look right. Where / which / what do I need to uncouple and re-couple in the correct spot. or??

Has the vehicle ever been in an accident?

the stick adjustments are made in the rear. The shift linkage rod to coupler will slip in and out or slide side to side. Loosen the bolt and move the rod as needed.

Thank you Jim. My assumption was that all but one connection would be keyed and un-adjustable.

The forward shift linkage rod also has fore and aft adjustment BUT it is not easy to do at all. Focus on the rear coupler also inspect the plastic bushings for wear they are slightly slotted front to rear but there should be no radial play. When the bushings perish you get very sloppy shifting.

You may want to mark the coupler position even though it's not where you want it. That way you've got a baseline and a starting point to go back to, should you do something goofy.

actually I just had to do this. If you losen the clamp just a tad that it still has friction, you can get back in the car and with a tiny bit of force move the shifter in to the position you want and becasue the bolt is only slightly loose, the shifter will stay there while you tighten it back up.

just a thought... my stick is to the left also, but the gates all appear normal. its as if there were two centering springs, and one is missing. I get all resistance when pushing the stick right, all assistance when pushing it left... is this related?

Nope, broken or missing springs in the gearbox.

OMG! I thought he was being funny. That ****e means something mechanically? Nah, ya'll are pullin' my stick. This thread belongs in Off Topic. Little Randy will move it any moment now.

Robert, you shouldn't complain. At least you have enough stick to lean!
There, feel better?
