Default me too

I'm with Normy. My car is just too valuable not to protect the fuel supply from ANY threat.

My gas cap doesn't lock either. I'm very interested in an affordable repair solution.

I have 2 alloy pawls made ....I think Normy has a pic. Now I have the toolmakers at work volunteering to cut me some in mild steel units with their NC wirecutter, patterned off the original nylon unit. When I get some I will post a pic, and see how many put their hands up. These will be springless units, so the end of the lock casting will need a little fettling to work - if you are not up for that, dont put your hand up please. Watch this space.

I have been using the nylon pawl that jpitman2 has made for my gas cap for almost a year and it has worked faultlessly. Feels good to be able to lock the gas cap!

Um... assuming the mechanism is the same in the early metal caps...

Thumbs up fettling

I'm definitely in ... but will need a little coaching on 'fettling'; subscribed.

Thanks Normy, I couldnt get pic loading to work before. Fettling means some hand finishing, filing etc to make something fit nicely - note that 'NICE' is strictly a technical word, used as in ' a nice fit'. To use my pawls without a spring, the end of the lock casting and the hole in the pawl may need some filing so that the lock can turn 180Degrees in the hole, and retract the pawl to lock the cap, and push the pawl out to unlock it. The lock end needs the corners filed more round to enable this, but still move the pawl enough to work properly.
Dave - havent seen an early metal cap - can you put up a pic please?

Have a prototype mild steel pawl in hand - just needs the top hole drilled. Will post pic tonight, but its an identical copy as far as teeth and section go. Once I have proved it, a dozen more will follow.
I will try to drill a spring hole as well for those who want to go that way, but they would have to enlarge the top cavity themselves. Dremel and small dia grinding wheel or carbide bit should do it.

''PELICAN'D'', adj. - *** on... work with me on this definition... toooo funny!

Hey, I'm in re: this 'pawl' thing...
I thought I was going to have to do this:

link- RE-KEYING 928 LOCKS , when, in fact, it's more like this:

But tell me, how do I know if I want 'paper or plastic', uh, I mean 'metal or plastic' pawl?

Thanks!

Kim

In this particular usage, ''PELICAN'D'' is a past, sometimes plural, but never perfect verb. It describes an action similar to "scooped up, sloshed around, then spit out", never to be see again except in Pelican Land. Pelican Land is a horrid place, inhabited by all types of outcast owners as well as their unbanished tormentors. The tormentors are often the alter-egos of the fun-loving friends you know from this group.

Our moderators are sometimes forced to play the "bill collector" roll, scooping the recalcitrant n'er-do-wells and relegating them to Pelican Land where there are almost no laws. Mant seem to thrive there, but a few have been known to return, branded, after offering substantial penance to the Rennlist gods.
