x2. This is very possibly your BEST scenario, because the alternative would be broken cams and a destroyed valve train, IF the cracks are a result of misaligned/wobbly rotating mass. The only other possibilities IMHO are a) the PO replaced with gears from a wreck or b) the engine received a frontal impact.

he has no spiders it is a 16 valve... BUT spiders probably should ALL BE CHANGED on the 32 valve cars as par of the comprehensive T-Belt "return the system to NEW condition ". The gears are not very strong prior attempts to make adjustable gears by cutting and drilling OFTEN had cam gear failures. I know from the number of broken 2 valve camshafts that sometimes people try to pry /lever off the cam gears sometimes they break the cams perhaps sometimes they crack the gears ??

Jim,
Thanks I was wondering what spider they were talking about.
Is it necessary to do the porken upgrade because the 16v gears are not available or is it ok just to replace the gears.
I did the belt about 700 miles ago and did not notice any cracks at that time.
Is it possible that really bad TT bearings could cause somthing like this?
I did them about 700 miles ago also.
I am kinda lost at this point.

As you can see the cam gears are off.
I posted pics of them because I am requesting opinions as to whether they are badly worn or not. My personal opinion I don't think they are worn bad at all.
I found a set at a local junk yard and should be picking them up tomorrow but I am not sure of there condition until I see them and I would like to compare them against mine.
If they are junk and should stay where they are then I will be picking up new gears at my local parts vendor for $90.00 each.
Please let me know what you think.
Davek9,
As you can see the face doesn't look bad but the crack does go all the way through to the face.
I didn't forget about hit my cam gear video. I will fufill the request and post it when I am done.
Bill,
As for the 47ft.lbs. torque, I don't have a dial type torque wrench but those cam gear bolts felt more like 90ft.lbs. to me.

Shiny teeth = worn out. Once the anodizing is worn through, the gears wear much faster.
Normally, the teeth wear in groups (in relation to valve openings, I think), but all the teeth on these gears are worn. How tight was the belt?

I wanted to write that...
Sometimes those cam gears can be very hard to remove; I had to use a gear puller on one of mine & even then it took a long time. Maybe somebody wanted to change the cam gear seals and cracked the gears trying to lever them off with some sort of inaproppriate lever?

The early 78-79 had cast steel gears!
