Default An audio concept for us Rennlister - please call in

Dear Fellow Rennlisters:

I write and record electronic music as a hobby and often times use samples of everyday sounds within the work. I have been at work on a piece of music that uses samples of 928 engine noise. As I've been putting it together, a thought occurred to me...

We've tried on the board here to collaborate on the creation of calendars and posters and other visuals. I'm curious to know if you think the idea of collaborating on an audio project would work. I think it could be cool to get samples of people's 928s as well as their voices. My shark goes bwaah, but it does not go BWAAH. It might be interesting to get sampled sounds from others' cars.

So too, I think it might be cool to collect the voices of Rennlisters simply saying, "Hello, this is Tim Sassen from Mundelein, Illinois." We've got UK dialects, North Carolina dialects, hey-der Wisconsin dialects as well as dialects and languages from all over the world. (By the way, I can't trace Nicole's accent - anyone?)

I could stitch those hellos together during the bridge of the song. That could be really cool.

Before I get into any further details, let me know if you think the concept here has legs or not. The end product wouldn't cost anybody anything; it really comes down to interest and understanding of the possibilities.

Peace,
Tim

That sounds like a cool and fun project! Well, engine is not in the car, so no BWAHH from here as of yet, but I can offer a german accent ;-)

I love the idea.

Hook me up with a list of what I need to do a clean recording and I'll get a sample of many different variations from up here.

I think this sounds like fun, too! Can you lay out some format guidelines, Tim, like the types of audio files that work best for you?

Lots of potential; great idea!

I can work with WAV, AIFF, and MP3 file types. I'd want to have a 44K sample rate so as to keep audio quality consistent. A portable digital recorder, placed out of the direct air stream from the exhaust, is how I got my engine sound.

Erik, I'd be happy to record yours (and Paul's and Tim's and Andrew's and... ) live at a little get together. Laptop, external mic and a USB interface should get us primo results

As for getting voices, I'll need to set up a voicemail system that lets me save recordings to digital audio. My workplace has such a system, but I'll need to clear that with them. If anyone has an alternate, please let me know.

I'll try to provide a link to some audio clips shortly to give you an idea of what I'm trying to do. The song has some major bump and throb to it and could mature into a great piece for you audiophiles. I'm assuming I cannot upload MP3's to the board.

I'm open to ideas.

P.S. Does anyone else love Rog100's voicemail? "Hello, this is Rawja Toyson..."

Fun idea! I'm in. I believe my digital camera can record audio clips, but at worst can you strip the audio off of a video clip? 'Cause I've got tons of those, and have fun making them!

Yep, I think I can do that. If you use Premiere for your video editing, you may be able to export out only the audio as well. Either way, we can make it work.
Just gotta watch ambient background noise with those digital camera condenser mics.

Peace.

Hmmmmm...had no idea that Nicole is from Stuttgart...that would mean I am not the only "Schwob" in the US on Rennlist...:-P Worked for years in Stuttgart and lived all my live just about 35 miles away from there...

Sorry for the OT, was just surprised...but maybe we can get some german soundbites into the mix...after all, it's the birthplace ;-) Just let me know what you want/need and I can make some recordings...

Marcus.

This could be very guten. Perhaps we could have you and Nicole do a short opening narrative which succinctly describes the creation and wonder of the Porsche 928. Then we lay in a little startup bwaah in and off we go.

Can someone confirm that MP3 files are not uploadable to Rennlist?

That sounds great...maybe I can find some german excerpts about 928 history that can be read as a short intro...I really like that idea...I will take a look or translate something...or maybe we can come up with something here.

Something like, "In 1971, engineers at Porsche began work on a new flagship luxury cruiser..." If we include reference to the front-placed, 8 cylinder, water-cooled engine and a few other innovations, we could have the makings of a great lead in.

We'll get some folks to add some language here. I'll bet Nicole would be happy to chime in.

More to come.

There was some euro-dance song years ago...guess some time late 90's which had some pretty catchy beat and riffs and during the intro and a couple times during the song some spoken lines/words...came together pretty well. I think the song was called "Too much rain over paradise" by ATB or something like that...maybe that intro is somewhat along the lines of what you are talking about.

I certainly can translate the wording and maybe record a couple sentences/words...whatever you need.

The closest I can describe this piece currently would be to compare it to pieces by Paul Oakenfold or The Crystal Method. I've asked Hacker to see if he can get some BWAAH audio while doing some blower work this weekend.

Marcus, I'll put together a short script for you to narrate as an intro. See if you can get Nicole to work in with you.

By this weekend, I'll upload some of the song and point you to it.

More to come...
