I just went ahead and removed wheel and fender liner. And found a Y connector with both arms broken off.

So, now I'm removing the washer filler neck and see how I can move those hoses around to give me room to work. Then I'll install the famous stainless steel Y connector...

Will report back.

Nicole since the fender liner is out why not remove the washer tank and remove the metal collar that the flexible fill hose is connected to, this collar is on the inside of the collar and it can be removed by heating the fill tube area with a heat gun and gently prying out the collar, also remove the tank and wash it out. Also remove the metal collar that is in the inside of the new washer fill tube, this one will come out easier since it wont be rusted, this will eliminate rust and corrosion getting sprayed all over the hood and windshield when you use your washers and also eliminate the clogged squirters and also since you already there replace the washer fill tube so it will match the new coolant tank. the metal collar is in place so the plastic wont collapse but it is not really needed since you dont have to make the clamps super tight on the flexible fill hose , Goodluck, Stan

OK, here is the last update for tonight...

The below pictures show what I found after removing the fender liner. To make it worse, the Y-Connector was not just broken off as shown, there were bits and pieces in all three hoses that had broken off as well. It took me quite a while to get those out!

Well, here are the reasons to upgrade to a stainless Y-Connector!

Then I removed the windshield washer filler neck, to make more room on the engine side. After removing the hose on the fender side, I noticed a few cracks in the plastic and wondered why this filler neck is full of old crud (which could not be explained from clean washer fluid). Then, as I was cleaning it, I realized there is a metal ring in there that's totallly rusty. It expanded to the point where it cracked the plastic!!! Grrrr!!!

I also pulled that #7 hose out, so I can take it with me tomorrow - maybe I can buy a longer piece of hose that will allow me to move the vacuum valve to a more serviceable spot.

We'll see...

Hi Stan:

Exactly my thoughts - now I have at least an idea why my front squirters don't work (I think that's the only thing that doesn't work on my car, and since I never needed them I just found out recently...).

the trouble is that Sharks in the Park is coming up in a week, and if I keep adding stuff to my list, I might not have the car ready for the event.

Either way, the existing filler neck is toast. Too many cracks to reinstall it (most of what you see in the picture are cracks inside the material, but there are two that go all the way through.

Nicole,

Good time to replace your filler neck as well and get a nice new one. I replaced mine several years ago and it's still nice and white. I did everything you are doing on the 79 a few years ago and I can hear my thoughts in the posts you're writing. It starts to become a while your in there fest.

You are pretty fortunate to go to a lot of 928 events, don't let your over anxiousness to get the car done for the event keep you from doing those things you want to or need to do while you've got the car apart. You've got an opportunity to replace several items right now and not have to do it again for a very long time!!! If you have to miss one event with the car, big deal, you'll have several more coming up pretty soon. Just grab a ride with another buddy out there and you'll have a good time. Don't hurry the job and kick yourself later for not doing some of the work you really want/need to do. You'll thank yourself later!

Just my $9.28 worth! Good luck!

Hi Chuck:

Thanks for your wise words! I agree with what you say, and will try to get as far as possible. But I do want to enjoy the car and have it for Sharks in the Park, since this year I won't be able to attend as many events as in the past two years. So I'll have to see how far I can get, and then make a decision on whether to button it up or leave it and drive waSAABi to SITP.

Let's see how the next few days go...

Today, Bill came to help me reinstall the vacuum valve and hose, which was relatively easy with the fender liner out. I also installed the Y-connector, and we filled and burped the coolant system. I consider myself done in the engine compartment, and now just have to finish the things under the passenger side fender. Maybe I'll be able to go through all of it. If not, there will be another time I'll have the liner out. Usually once a year I find some kind of reason...

Nicole try to remove the metal collar that is inside the washer tank it is very similar to the one in the fill tube and will be rinsing rusty particles into your washer motor and causing all kinds of problems. I have done this job on 5 cars already. You should also remove the tank to clean out all of the junk that is swimming in the bottom, once you do this it will be a system that you fill and forget. See the above post for removal of the metal collar, good luck your on the home stretch , Stan
