Default Doing the TB and FPR together

Just a word to others in my shoes on TB (timing belt) replacement and FP (flex plate) release. I just bought my 86.5 and have dived into the maintenance issues (no history from the PO so at 130K, it's a longish list). Have got everything removed for the timing belt replacement, working on a lot of interior "issues" (man, I love that word) and thought, hmmmmm, sunny weekend in Central VA, let's do the flex plate!

Dropped the exhaust, no probs, took off the lower bell housing, no probs, and sure enough, the plate is visibly dished. Then, had there been room under the car, I would have wacked myself in the forehead.

OF COURSE you can't figure out where the clamp on the shaft will be ahead of time, which means OF COURSE you may have to rotate the engine to loosen the clamp bolt, and OF COURSE the clamp bolt was 180 degrees out of position...

So, OF COURSE I had a beer...

It's no big deal, I don't mind working on several maintenance "threads" at once, it's just that it is rewarding to get them done! And BTW, on my 86.5 AT there appears to be a considerable amount of dish in the plate. Will report actual figures later, i.e., after the TB is replaced and I can rotate the engine again. Let's see, time to fill up that manure spreader and get to work...

When you release the tension on the flex plate you should measure your crank end play before you tighten it back up. Not hard to do but to get an accurate measurement you need a dial indicator.

No problem- that's in the plans thanks to doing my homework on Rennlist, and I'm a hobby machinist so even though I might get things bassackwards I can measure to the tenth just how bass the ackwards is ...
