Great news! Timing belts now good for 10 years!
Porsche Cars North America has just sent out an updated memo with regards to timing belt replacement times. Though it is still recommended that you replace the timing belt every 45,000 miles, the time period of which you have to do so has been extended from at least every 5 years to 10 years.
This memo was sent out by Porsche N.A. to my mechanic last week as well as most other maitenance facilties, I'm sure. He said he would print off a copy for me so that I could download the attachment to Rennlist.
This is great news, as I've always thought 5 years was a bit excessive on a 5000 mile timing belt.
Attachment to follow next week...........................

I never saw the original 5 year recommendation. AFAIK, it's not in any of the service bulletins, my car's maintenance guide or the WSM. All I ever saw was the mileage schedule, which I have been following, although I have never gone longer than 9 years. Was this sent to you by mail from PCNA? I'm a member, and I don't recall seeing anything.

10 years ago, the "word on the street" was 6 years, 60k miles. More recently, shorter intervals are recommended by the 928 community, but I suspect that it is because most cars are well into 100k+ mile territory where rollers and tensioners and rebuilt water pumps need more frequent attention.

It may be that the quality of the belts is getting better. Aramid/kevlar reinforcing, better compounds that resist ozone, or maybe ozone depletion really does have a positive effect on something...
Some recommendations from manufacturers are sent out to support guarantee issues, and as the result of legal action. For instance, new cars have 100k guarantees on meeting smog requirements, so we get spark plugs that will last 100k. So the dealer won't have to change them under warrantee. New oxy sensors too, although they get weak sooner. Belts of all types are improved a lot over the stuff available when the cars were designed in the 1970's. Lots of parts are getting extended lifespans with a click of a mouse and a keystroke or two. Ain't technology wonderful!

Although my wifes VW Lupo was claimed to have a T belt life of 60,00 miles it broke after 58,000...

I have a hard time believing Porsche is sending out any memos on the 928 except for maybe oil.
I'll check on this with my sources. Do you have the Porsche document number?

I'm with Dudley. If this isn't a late April fools joke, it is yet another attempt by Porsche to get their bastard step childeren off the road.
I can just hear it now - WW (initials of P-car CEO): "I want all 928s off the road before the Panamera is released! Make it happen NOW. Now. now now! <stamps feet>."

Sweet Jesus, shut the $#@% up idiot! I don't give a flying %$#@ what in the hell you or anyone else thinks of me. I merely stated that my mechanic informed me he received a memo from Porsche stating you can wait 10 years to replace the timing belt. So what, I don't happen to have it in my @#%$ing hands at the absolute present moment. I said I would attach it on Monday when I go waaay out of my way to get it from him so that I can specifically publish it on Rennlist! Was Monday to long for you or something there sweet pants? And absolutely NO one could find any reason whatsoever to bad mouth me over making a statement about something so positive, which I specifically said I would attach on Monday. So in the meantime, keep your big $%#@ing mouth shut, you small time piece of negative, badmouthing, no friends except for those on the internet freak! Loser!

P.S. If this wasn't me that had made this thread, you wouldn't have even brought it up in the first place. You are a Low Miler follower, hater, and pig piler. My address is 10708 Birch Tree Court, Indianapolis, IN 46236 if you care to put your panties on and come over here so that we can talk about this man to man PUNK $%#@! I doubt I'll be seeing you. But in the case you make the mistake to come in the first place, I'll make you this promise, I'LL PAY FOR YOUR ENTIRE AIRFARE TO GET HERE! GUARANTEED!
I'm just sick and tired of that group of overweight, friendless except for the internet nerds who come down on eveything I say on this forum. The picture of Andrew Olson next to his GT says it all! I BEG OF YOU TO COME AND JUST HAVE A MAN TO MAN TALK WITH ME.......NOTHING MORE THAN TALKING, OF COURSE!
