Default 928/RL GTG to see Redline the movie (San Diego)

I know the Wine and Jazz Gig is close, but on April 19th (IIRC) the movie Redline is opening.

Would there be a reason for a night time GTG for this?

Recent article...." Behind the wheel of 'Redline'
A Newport lender- turned-movie- producer puts his money – and cars – where his mouth is.
By BARRY KOLTNOW
The Orange County Register
Daniel Sadek is in a bad mood, and, amazingly, it has nothing to do with the heavily damaged, $1.2 million Ferrari sitting in front of his Newport Coast home.

The 38-year-old movie producer isn't losing sleep over the Ferrari, or the two other wrecked exotic automobiles that litter his driveway. After all, the collector has 24 more where they came from.

What's troubling Sadek this morning is a phone call that informed him that his new film, "Redline," which opens Friday, is not tracking well (has a low recognition factor) among potential movie-goers. That can translate into disappointing numbers at the box office, and Sadek put up his own money (and cars) to make the $26 million action film about rich people who race their fancy cars for sport.

Born in Lebanon and raised in Paris, Sadek moved to Orange County 20 years ago and has amassed a fortune in real estate. He owns Costa Mesa-based mortgage lender Quick Loan Funding.

Sitting in his living room, he explained why he got into the movie business, what he drives to the grocery store and the reason he stopped driving to Las Vegas. He also responded to Internet-fueled speculation that the accident in which actor Eddie Griffin totaled Sadek's beloved red Ferrari Enzo was a publicity stunt.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: I assume you worked very hard for your money.

DANIEL SADEK: Yes.

OCR: So why are you throwing it away in Hollywood?

SADEK: I'm not throwing it away; I love the movies. I've always wanted to be in the movies. I wanted to be an actor first, but when I realized I didn't have the talent or the looks, I decided to be a producer.

OCR: How does one get into the business of producing movies?

SADEK: I had an ex-fiancee (actress Nadia Bjorlin, formerly of "Days of Our Lives" and one of the stars of "Redline") who was in the business. I watched how frustrated she got driving up to L.A. every day for auditions and casting calls. Since she was there for me pretty much from day one when I opened my business, I told her that one day I'd make enough money so we could make our own movies.

OCR: When did you actually get into the movie business?

SADEK: Almost three years ago, I started Chicago Pictures.

OCR: Why didn't you call it Newport Beach Pictures?

SADEK: Newport doesn't have the history that Chicago has.

OCR: And this is your third film? ("If I Had Known I Was a Genius" and "Trainwreck: My Life as an Idiot" are the others.)

SADEK: Yes, but this is the first one I was 100 percent involved, from writing the treatment to working on post-production.

OCR: Was it too much work?

SADEK: Yes, it was too much, but I love challenges.

OCR: And you were running your other business at the same time?

SADEK: As best I could.

OCR: What was the hardest part of making a movie?

SADEK: Being an independent competing against the studios.

OCR: Why was that difficult?

SADEK: I realized that the major movie studios constitute a monopoly. Nobody can get in. They don't want any competition.

OCR: In what way?

SADEK: Not only is it hard to get theaters to show your movies, you can't even get theaters to show your trailers. You can't do your marketing. I've never seen anything like it.

OCR: Did you get your trailers shown anywhere?

SADEK: Only on two movies, "300" and "Blades of Glory." But we shipped trailers on every movie. They just didn't get played. The theater owners have been great, but we don't have a lot of clout because we don't have a lot of product. A big studio puts out 40 or 50 movies a year.

OCR: Can you counter that by buying advertising spots on TV?

SADEK: It's not as effective as trailers because TV people don't go to the movies. The people who watch trailers are at the movies. Trailers are also free marketing.

OCR: So, distribution is the biggest problem?

SADEK: Distribution is the only problem. Production is no problem at all. (Chicago Pictures is based in West Hollywood and has about 20 employees.)

OCR: Speaking of production, why did you donate your own cars to this movie?

SADEK: I couldn't ask someone else to donate their cars.

OCR: How many cars got wrecked?

SADEK: Only one, a $500,000 Porsche, was supposed to be wrecked, but a second one was wrecked in an accident at the end of the shoot.

OCR: Did you feel actual pain when they were damaged?

SADEK: The most important thing was that no one was hurt.

OCR: Which brings us to Eddie Griffin and the Ferrari crash. Was it real or a hoax?

SADEK: It was absolutely real. Believe me, if I had known how much publicity it would get, I would have staged it, and done a much better job of it. It could have been so much more spectacular.

OCR: What do you drive around the neighborhood?

SADEK: The 599 Ferrari.

OCR: Do you ever get it out of first gear?

SADEK: You can shift it to automatic.

OCR: How much does it cost?

SADEK: It retails for about $500,000.

OCR: Your movie starts with a bet that someone can drive from L.A. to Las Vegas in two hours. How fast do you drive to Vegas?

SADEK: I don't drive to Vegas anymore. I was arrested in 1996 for driving 165 miles an hour and I spent three hours in jail. I haven't driven there since.

OCR: What's the thrill of driving a Ferrari? And that question comes from a Honda owner.

SADEK: Listen, Honda is a great car. Besides, cars don't make you a better human being.

OCR: That means a lot coming from a Ferrari owner.

SADEK: To answer your question, it's the sound of the engine and the adrenaline rush you get from driving one. You'd have to drive one to understand.

OCR: Is that an invitation? "

Just some background on the man behind the movie ...
